The Situation in the North 북한의 상황
You will remember that we are asking prayers for Kenneth Jun Ho Bae, Korean American tour group leader who was detained in North Korea in December. The latest word is that he has been sentenced to death for anti-State activities. The recent trip to NK by former New Mexico governor Bill Richardson was an attempt to bring him out. While that did not succeed, we have hopes that another trip may prove more fruitful. At least we are praying for such. Keep Kenneth in your prayers. At that same time the Governor Richardson went, Eric Schmidt, the CEO of Google accompanied him to much fanfare in the North. Here is an interesting report on that trip by his daughter, Sophie Schmidt. We also have some cogent comments on the North's pursuit of high technology by veteran analyst, Andrei Lankov. According to his view, Kim Jong Un's pursuit of technology, rather than other things, betrays how stuck he is in the old ideological mentality. At the same time, hopes for change seem to be declining and a new cynicism settling in. And, yet, perhaps music will make new inroads as the Munich Chamber Orchestra conducted an interesting and warmly received tour the end of last year.

The old ways continue to manifest themselves as pressure mounts for people to contribute to the nation's needs including a New Year's day proclamation about required contributions of manure and scrap metal. There has also been an increase in checkpoints which is just another way to put money in the pockets of officials. It is also fairly widely known that North Korea has been using illicit production of methamphetamines for sale abroad as a major source of foreign currency. This has been backfiring as an increasing number of North Koreans have been taking the drug. The number of addicts continues to increase as well as sellers even as arrests increase. There are also signs that labor camps are being expanded in the North.
North Korea's ruler, Kim Jong Un, turned 30 on January 8th and to celebrate gave two pounds of candy to every youngster in the country even as they continue to suffer growth-stunting malnutrition and famine continues to afflict the land.
여전히 북한 정부는 주민들에게는 과거방식의 부역과 희생을 요구하고 있습니다. 새해를 맞아 비료와 고철을 모아서 국가의 필요에 부응하라고 압박하고 있습니다. 또한 관리들의 주머니를 채우기 위해서 새로운 방식들을 도입하고 있습니다. 북한이 외화를 얻기 위해 메타암피타민을 해외에 불법 판매하는 것은 이미 잘 알려진 사실입니다. 이로 인해 북한 주민들의 약물이용도 늘어나고 있습니다. 약물 판매 및 중독으로 인한 구금이 늘어나면서 북한내 노동수용소가 확장되고 있는 것이 이에 대한 반증입니다. 북한 지도자 김정은은 1월 8일 서른살 생일을 맞아 모든 젊은이들에게 2파운드의 사탕을 선물했습니다. 하지만 이들은 이미 성장을 위협받는 기아와 영양결핍으로 고통받고 있습니다.
On the other hand, North Koreans who come south to the Republic of Korea do not necessarily have it easy. North Koreans in the south do experience discrimination and are often overwhelmed by the pace of life, the multitude of choices and the need to fend for themselves. This has led to
some wanting to return and even a few doing so. But, it seems that there are many reasons to "re-defect" including possible pressure and blackmail from the North as well as attempts to lure them back. For whatever reason, there have been a number of highly-publicized re-defections that the North has been promoting as much as possible to let those who are thinking of heading south that it is not always easy. We are very concerned about the welfare of our North Korean brothers and sisters living among us in the South. Please keep them in your prayers.
반면에 남한으로 오는 탈북자들의 생활도 쉽지만은 않습니다. 남한에 사는 탈북자들은 그들 앞에 놓인 다양한 선택과 삶의 속도에 종종 압도당하며 차별을 겪기도 합니다. 이로 인해 몇몇은 북한으로 돌아가기를 원하고 실제로 그렇게 하는 경우도 있습니다. 다시 북한으로 가는 이유는 다양합니다. 남한 생활의 스트레스도 있지만 북한에서 다시 돌아오도록 회유하는 압력과 선전도 이유입니다. 어떤 이유에서든지 북한에 다시 돌아온 탈북자를 승진시키고 널리 알려서 탈북을 생각하는 사람들에게 탈북이 쉽지만은 않다는 것을 알리고 있습니다. 우리는 우리 나라에 사는 탈북 형제 자매들의 삶에 많은 관심을 기울이고 있습니다. 계속해서 기도해 주시기 바랍니다.
The River of Life School 생명의강 학교
School starts up again in a month. We will begin our fourth year of school by adding the second year of high school. We will then have a total of 5 levels or grades. We are very pleased with our rising 2nd year of high school class. They are indeed the older brothers and sisters of the school and our other students look up to them. We are also very pleased with the prevailing positive attitude among the students and the ever-growing sense of community.
한 달 후면 개학이고, 생명의강 학교는 고등학교 2학년 과정이 신설되며 개교 네 해째를 맞습니다. 그러면 중고등 5개 학년을 운영하게 됩니다. 고등학교 2학년 과정이 생기게 되서 매우 기쁩니다. 2학년이 되는 학생들은 생명의강 학교 중고등 과정을 거쳐 올라온 우리학교의 최고참 선배들로 다른 학생들이 우러러 봅니다. 이는 학생들 가운데 긍정적인 분위기를 형성하며 공동체 의식을 더욱 높여줍니다.
As we prepare for the new school year, we are busy with interviews for new students and their families as well as potential teachers. We praise God for the wonderful and dedicated faculty that He has sent us and look forward to the new additions that we will gain this year.
새 학기를 준비하며 교사 지원자들과 신입생 가정을 면접하며 바쁘게 보내고 있습니다. 너무나 헌신적이며 훌륭한 교직원들을 다시 학교로 보내주신 하나님을 찬양하며, 올 해 새로 오실 선생님들을 기대하고 있습니다.
Please, as always, keep the school in your prayers, especially as we begin the new school year and now, also, as we start thinking about the expanded needs for next year. We are really packing out our small temporary space and are not sure what we will do next year if we have not been able to start construction on the new school at the Three Seas.
항상 그렇듯이 학교를 위해 기도해 주십시오. 특히 새로운 한 해 동안 내년의 캠퍼스 이전을 준비할 수 있도록 기도해 주시기 바랍니다. 실제로 현재 임시 캠퍼스는 너무 협소해서 삼수령에 학교 건축을 하지 못할 경우 내년에 어떻게 해야 할 지 모르는 상황입니다.

We are all set to move forward with construction on the first phase of the Training Center that will house The River of Life School. All that is needed now is for the Lord to send the funds needed. Please join us in praying for this to happen.

The Three Seas Ranch 삼수령 목장
Our ranch community continues to experience change as one family has determined that it is time for them to go on sabbatical. As we have all discussed this together and prayed about it, we have the sense that this is God's will. We are sure that their year away will be a blessed time for them and the family. At the same time, we consider another family who may come to take their place. The Lord keeps us flexible as people come and go. One practical and important matter is the need to maintain consistency in the care of the cattle. Fortunately, this is happening and as new people join us, they are being well integrated into the life and work of the Ranch community. Do keep us in your prayers, however, as we go through these changes. In the mean time, we are pleased to say that beef sales are going well and we are starting to send funds from the proceeds directly to The River of Life School. We have sold the first of our Calf Dream Project cattle which had been contributed specifically for the school. We have several more that will go to market throughout the year. Thank you to all who contributed to this project and to those who continue to. Each calf donated is sold for beef after three years and the proceeds used to purchase another calf to keep the cycle going and a substantial portion given to the school for scholarship funding.
목장 공동체는 계속해서 변화를 겪고 있습니다. 한 가정이 안식년을 보낼 때가 되어서 떠나기로 결정했기 때문입니다. 우리는 함께 논의하고 기도하는 가운데 하나님의 뜻이라고 받아들이게 되었습니다. 안식년이 이 가정에게 또 가족에게 축복의 시간이 될 것이라고 확신합니다. 동시에 다른 가정이 목장으로 들어오게 될 것 입니다. 주님께서 사람이 들고 나는 것에 우리를 계속해서 유연하게 해 주십니다. 실제로 중요한 문제는 인력의 변화에도 소를 일관되게 돌보는 것입니다. 다행히 새로 들어온 사람들이 목장 공동체 생활과 일에 잘 적응해 오고 있습니다. 기쁜 소식은 목장의 한우 판매가 잘 되고 있어서 곧 생명의강 학교에 수익금을 보낼 수 있게 됩니다. 송아지꿈으로 구입한 첫번째 소를 판매해서 학교에 수익금을 주었고, 올 한해 더 많은 수익금이 학교로 돌아갈 것입니다. 송아지꿈에 후원해 주신 모든 분들께 감사드립니다. 송아지꿈 후원금으로 산 송아지는 목장에서 3년 정도 키운후 판매해서 수익금은 학교로 돌아가고 원금으로 계속해서 송아지를 사서 수익을 내는 생명의강 학교에 장학금을 주는 시스템입니다.
