Jane Torrey​ 현 재인 사모님 소식

It is with great appreciation that we acknowledge all the many words of condolence and encouragement that we have received upon the passing of Jane Grey Torrey, co-founder of Jesus Abbey and our mother. She passed away quietly in our Connecticut home on Maundy Thursday, April 5, 2012 at the age of 91. (In Korea it was Good Friday, adding special meaning to her passing for people here.) There has been a great outpouring of love showered on the immediate family and on the whole Jesus Abbey community for which we are deeply grateful. Many of you helped with all of the medical and other expenses related to her care during the past year and there have been a number of memorial gifts made in her name for the construction of the Three Seas Center and the realization of her dream and her husband, Archer Torrey's dream for building a youth training center, school and place to prepare for the opening of North Korea. Thank you, all of you, for your prayers, your support and your love.

예수원의 공동 설립자이자 제 어머니이신 현 재인 여사의 서거에 대해 위로와 격려의 말씀을 주신 모든 분들께 진심으로 감사드립니다. 어머니께서는 2012년 4월 5일 세족식이 열리는 목요일에 커네티컷의 저희 집에서 조용히 돌아가셨습니다. (한국시간으로는 성금요일로 소천일에 특별한 의미를 부여하는 분들도 계셨습니다.) 직계가족에게뿐 아니라 예수원 공동체에 부어진 엄청난 사랑으로 인해 우리는 깊이 감사드립니다. 많은 분들이 지난 1년간 어머니의 치료와 이에 필요한 비용을 감당해 주셨고, 별세하신 후에는 어머니의 이름으로 삼수령 센터를 건축할 수 있도록 많은 헌금을 내 주셨습니다. 삼수령 센터 건축은 어머니와 아버지 대 천덕 신부님의 꿈으로 북한 개방을 준비하기 위해 이 곳에 청소년 훈련원과 학교를 세우는 것입니다. 여러분 모두의 기도와 지원, 사랑에 감사드립니다.





Mrs. Jane Torrey--Mother or Grandmother Jane as she was affectionately called--was laid to rest in Jesus Abbey's tiny cemetery on April 18th, 2012 where her ashes, in a beautiful pottery urn, were interred next to those of her husband, Fr. Archer Torrey. Some 200 community members, family and close friends gathered at the Abbey for the final funeral service, a beautiful, moving and glorious celebration of her life and of the Resurrection. The River of Life School students--always dear to her--provided a sweet vocal tribute. Her passing was actually celebrated with three very special memorial services. The first one on Monday, April 9th at our home church, the Church of the Risen Savior in Rockville, CT. This was an intimate time for family, church members and friends to gather from around the United States. The second service honored her with great reverence at the Anglican Cathedral in Seoul on Monday, April 19th. Many representatives of the various denominations of the Korean Church, other dignitaries, close friends and admirers filled the Cathedral to overflowing. Through all of these services and remembrances, there ran a deep strain of joy in her life and her entrance into the presence of her Lord as well as a warmth and concern for others that typified her life among us for these many decades.

현 재인 여사-다정하게는 재인 엄마, 또는 재인 할머니로 불리신-의 유해는 아름다운 항아리에 담아서 2012년 4월 18일 예수원의 작은 묘지, 남편 대 천덕 신부님의 묘소 옆에 봉안되었습니다. 공동체 회원들과 가족들 및 가까운 친구들 200여명이 예수원에 운집하여 아름답고 감동스러우며 영광스러운 그녀의 삶과 부활을 기억하며 마지막 예배를 함께 드렸습니다. 생명의강 학교 학생들은 아름다운 조가를 불러주었습니다. 실제로 어머니의 장례예배는 세 번에 걸쳐 특별하게 드려졌습니다. 첫 번째는 4월 9일 월요일 저희 모교회인 커네티컷 락빌의 구주부활교회에서 드려졌는데, 이 때는 가족들과 교회 식구들 및 미국에 사는 친구들이 모인 친밀한 시간이었습니다. 두 번째 예배는 4월 19일 월요일에 서울 성공회 대성당에서 깊은 존경심을 담아 어머니의 영예를 기리며 드려졌습니다. 한국 교회의 다양한 교단의 대표자들과 고위 관리들 및 가까운 친구들과 어머니를 존경하는 사람들이 대성당을 가득 메웠습니다. 이 모든 예배와 기념의식 동안 지난 수 십년간 우리에게 각인된 어머니 삶의 표지인 따뜻함과 관심뿐 아니라 주님의 임재 곁으로 간 어머니로 인한 기쁨과 어머니 삶에 대한 기쁨이 흘렀습니다.





We truly thank God that we have all been blessed by the love and prayers of this wonderful woman of God. We are confident that she and Fr. Archer continue to pray for us in that "great cloud of witnesses." (Hebrews 12:1)

우리는 이런 놀라운 하나님의 여인이 우리에게 보여준 기도와 사랑으로 인해 모두 축복받았음을 하나님께 진심으로 감사드립니다. 우리는 현 재인 여사와 대 천덕 신부님이 "구름같이 많은 증인"(히 12:1)들처럼 계속해서 우리를 위해 기도해 주실 것을 확신합니다.







The Situation in the North 북한의 상황

The grand celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Kim Il Sung and the establishing of North Korea as a "great and strong nation" has come and gone. North Korea forfeited the promised food aid from the United States by launching a rocket just days before the anniversary. Intended to showcase North Korea's strength and power, the launch was a miserable failure and greatly embarrassed Kim Jong Un. It also may indicate serious decision making problems in the North. It appears to be just one of a number of blunders that Kim has been making, including placing himself above his father, Kim Jong Il, as First Chairman of the National Defense Commission while keeping his deceased father as the Chairman. Apparently, he did not realize that this gave him a higher status. There are also stories out of North Korea that he may be consolidating his power by eliminating many older generals--by mortar fire executions. It also looks like his decision to launch the rocket may have pushed his main ally, China, a bit too far to the benefit of defectors. On the actual centenary celebration, there was a grand display of North Korean military might including newer and bigger missiles--which are quite likely fake.

김 일성 주석 탄생 100주년을 기념하며 북한을 "강성대국"으로 재건하고자 하는 모든 축하행사는 끝이 났습니다. 북한은 기념일 바로 며칠 전 로켓을 발사함으로써 미국으로부터의 식량 원조 약속을 걷어찼습니다. 북한의 힘과 능력을 과시하기 위해서 시도한 로켓 발사는 비참한 실패로 마감됐고 김 정은을 곤혹스럽게 만들었습니다. 또한 북한 내 의사결정에 심각한 문제가 있음을 보여주는 계기가 되었습니다. 김 정은이 그동안 보여준 어리석은 실수 중에 하나인 듯 합니다. 그동안 김정은은 돌아가신 아버지를 국방위 위원장으로 유지하는 동시에 자신은 아버지보다 높은 국방위 제 1 위원장이 되기도 했습니다. 김 정은은 이로 인해 자신에게 더 높은 지위가 주어진다는 것을 분명히 깨닫지는 못했습니다. 북한에서는 박격포 처형으로 나이든 장군들을 제거함으로써 김 정은이 자신의 세를 견고히 하려 한다는 이야기들도 나오고 있습니다. 미사일 발사도 최대 동맹국 중국을 압박하려는 그의 결정인 듯 합니다만, 압박이 지나쳐서 수혜를 받지는 못할 듯 합니다. 100주년 기념식에서는 실제로는 가짜로 드러난 거대한 신형 미사일을 비롯한 북한의 다양한 무기를 선보였습니다.





In the mean time, life is difficult for the ordinary people. Many people have been forced to move into unfinished apartments in Pyongyang but some have refused out of safety concerns. You will remember that these were the apartments built by students and others who rushed to finish in time for the grand celebration. The celebrations have also been a real hardship for the school children in the outlying regions who had to work hard through the cold months to prepare mass gymnastic events--often going hungry. Korean Peoples Army Founding Day on April 25th has placed a greater burden on people than in the past as well.

그 동안 주민들의 삶은 어렵기만 합니다. 많은 사람들이 완성되지 않은 평양의 아파트로 강제로 이주했고 몇 몇만이 안전상의 이유로 이를 받아들이지 않았습니다.

여러분도 기억하시듯 평양의 아파트는 100주년 기념 행사를 위해서 학생들을 동원해서 건설했습니다. 기념행사는 멀리 떨어진 곳에 사는 어린 학생들을 고생스럽게 만들었습니다. 매스게임을 준비하기 위해서 추운 겨울에도 굶주리며 연습해야 했기 때문입니다. 4월 25일 조선 인민군 창립일 역시 주민들에게 과거보다 더 큰 부담을 주고 있습니다.

The River of Life School 생명의강 학교

Principal Liz Torrey is back at school! As you will remember, Liz returned to the States to care for my mother just days after school started. At the time, we did not know how long it would be but we feared it might be for several months. As it turned out it was only for one month but that one month with my mother before she went home to the Lord was a precious experience for Liz. We were so sure that this was right that we were comfortable entrusting the care of the school into the hands of our teachers (several just starting with us) and the parents. God confirmed all these decisions by watching over everything with great care. The fathers, especially, rose to the need and led the students in a number of special field trips and events. We are most grateful to the way that the parents pulled together with the teachers. And, our teachers did a wonderful job as well. Now Liz is settling back in at school, much to the great appreciation of everyone, but it is, as she says, a "new normal." God used this crisis to bring the school to a place that we had not anticipated getting to for another one to two years. As a result, since she is no longer needed as much for the day to day operations, Liz is able to focus much more strategically on the future of the school--financial stability, new location and curriculum. We thank God for how this has all worked out.

리즈 토레이 교장선생님이 학교로 돌아왔습니다! 여러분 모두 리즈 교장선생님이 개학하고 얼마 안돼서 제 어머니를 간호하기 위해 미국에 갔던 것을 기억하실 것입니다. 그 때만 해도 간호기간이 얼마나 길어질 지 몰랐고, 몇 개월은 예상했습니다. 꼭 한 달만에 돌아올 수 있게 됐지만, 어머니가 소천하기 전까지 함께 지낸 한 달의 시간은 리즈 자매에게 소중한 경험이었습니다. 우리는 학교를 교사들(몇몇 교사에게는 첫 학기인)에게 맡기는 데 안심했기에 이 일이 맞다고 확신했습니다. 하나님은 모든 일을 세심하게 돌봐주시면서 이 모든 결정이 맞다는 것을 확인시켜주셨습니다. 특히 아버지들이 자원해서 다양한 현장학습 프로그램으로 학생들을 인솔해 주셨습니다. 학부모님들이 선생님들과 함께 협력하는 모습에 우리는 가장 감사했습니다. 교사들도 훌륭히 역할을 감당해 주었습니다. 이제 교장선생님이 학교에 돌아왔고, 모두에게 깊이 감사하며 리즈 자매는 "새로운 정상궤도"라고 말했습니다. 하나님이 이 위기를 사용하셔서 학교가 앞으로 1~2년은 덜 걸려서 만들어질 모습으로 성장시키셨습니다. 예상치 못했던 일입니다. 결과적으로 매일의 운영을 위해서 리즈 교장선생님이 반드시 필요하진 않기 때문에, 교장선생님은 좀 더 전략적으로 학교의 장래 운영에 집중할 수 있게 되었습니다. 재정 안정이나 새로운 캠퍼스 및 교과과정에 초점을 두고 일할 수 있습니다. 이 모든 일을 이루신 하나님의 방법에 감사드립니다.





One great concern is our tiny facility. It is small and crowded but it does not look like we will be able to move out this year as we had hoped. (More on that below.) We were also concerned in that our agreement with the village elders for the use of the school expires this year. We are pleased to state that they have asked us to continue using the space. We are signing another three-year agreement. Of course, we hope we won't be there three years from now--we won't be able to grow in this space--but we are very grateful for the present easing of concern. We can make it there for another year. The questions we face are what to do to make that space usable as we grow and how much to invest in it while we also focus on building the permanent school at the Three Seas. Join us in praying for wisdom.

우리의 최대 관심은 협소한 시설입니다. 캠퍼스는 작고 사람은 많지만, 우리가 희망했던 이전은 올 해 이루어질 것 같지 않습니다.(아래 더 자세한 내용이 있습니다.) 또한 마을 어른들이 허락한 현재 사용하는 임시 캠퍼스 사용 기간이 올 해 만료되는 것도 걱정거리였습니다. 다행히 마을 어른들은 이 곳을 계속해서 사용해도 좋다고 제안하셨고, 3년 계약을 맺었습니다. 물론 지금부터 3년을 더 머물기를 바라지는 않습니다. 이 공간에서는 더 이상 학교가 자랄 수 없기 때문입니다. 그래도 현재의 문제가 쉽게 해결되어 매우 감사하고 있습니다. 1년은 더 이곳 캠퍼스를 이용할 수 있겠습니다. 우리가 당면한 문제는 삼수령에 영구적인 캠퍼스를 세우는 데 초점을 맞추면서도, 이 곳 임시 캠퍼스를 우리가 좀 더 넉넉하게 사용할 수 있도록 수리하는데 얼마나 더 투자해야 할 지 입니다. 지혜를 위해 함께 기도해 주십시오.







The Three Seas 삼수령

As I have mentioned in the past, we expected to get our construction permit for the first phase of the Three Seas Center last December. However, a major early season snow storm prevented us from completing one last survey that the Forestry Department required. The snow remained deep in the woods until well into April but now it is gone as spring is finally coming to our mountains. We began working anew on the survey this week and expect to finish in a few days. There are a few other items to be taking care of but we do not anticipate any major problems moving forward with getting the permit. The big problem is that, even if we were to start construction very soon, we do not have enough time to finish by the coming winter when we had hoped to move The River of Life School into its new home. We now have to wait until next year at the earliest. There is also the minor problem of lack of funds to start th e actual construction. We have enough to get the permits and we have received some generous memorial gifts but we are still a long way from what is needed. We continue moving forward one step at a time, confident that the Lord is leading us and will see that all things are done according to his schedule. At the same time, we ask that you continue to pray with us for the construction funds.

전에 말씀 드렸듯이 작년 12월 삼수령 센터 건축의 1단계에 대한 건축허가를 받을 것으로 기대했습니다. 하지만 폭설로 인해 산림청이 요구한 마지막 측량 작업을 마칠 수 없어서 계획은 무산되었습니다. 숲속에 잔설이 많아서 4월이 돼서야 작업을 재개할 수 있었고, 지금 작업 중입니다. 이번주에 측량작업을 재개해서 며칠 내로 마무리될 듯 합니다. 몇 가지 더 살펴야 할 사항이 생겼지만 건축허가를 받는데 지장은 없습니다. 큰 문제는 빠른 시일에 착공한다해도 올 겨울에는 생명의강 학교를 새로운 캠퍼스로 이전하려던 바람를 이루기에는 시간이 충분하지 않습니다. 빨라도 내년까지는 기다려야 합니다. 또한 실제 건축을 시작하기 위한 자금이 부족합니다. 건축허가를 받는 데는 충분한 금액이고 자원하시는 분들이 현 재인 사모님을 기억하며 많은 헌금을 내 주셨지만, 필요한 금액에는 미치지 못합니다. 우리는 주님께서 우리를 인도하고 계시고 모든 일을 그분이 계획대로 이루신다고 확신하며 한 번에 한 발자국씩 계속해서 전진하고 있습니다. 그와 동시에 여러분께 요청 드리는 것은 건축 자금을 위해 우리와 함께 계속해서 기도해 주십시오.





We rejoice in our Lord and His great love for us. We are certain of the resurrection and His atonement that has brought us into a very real and intimate relationship with Him. We look forward to His wonderful provision in all these things and encourage you also to rejoice with us in these things. It is a good thing to be a servant of the King.

우리는 우리 주님과 우리를 향하신 주님의 크신 사랑을 기뻐합니다. 주님의 부활하심과 희생으로 인해 우리가 주님과 매우 실제적인 친밀감을 누리게 되었음을 확신합니다. 이 모든 일에 대해 주님께서 놀라운 방법으로 채우시고 우리도 이 일을 즐거워 하도록 격려하실 것을 기대합니다. 왕의 종이 된다는 것은 멋진 일입니다.
