* The Situation in the North 북한 상황

Unfortunately, the news out of North Korea these days is not good and seems to be getting worse.  Many of you had been praying for the 30 or so North Koreans being held by Chinese authorities for planned return.  Despite a large international outcry and call to China to release the North Koreans, they were sent back.  Here is a short article from CNN dated March 9th.  However, there is a bit of better news in that the Chinese do seem to be sensitive to international pressure and are allowing up to eleven North Koreans who have been in various consulates in Beijing for many months to come to South Korea. The down side is that China is still refusing to abandon its standing policy of returning all North Koreans in China who have entered illegally.  We do not know the ultimate fate of those who were sent back in March but we not have much hope for them.  Please keep these men, women and children in your prayers.

안타깝게도, 요즈음 북한에서 나오는 소식은 더욱 나빠지고 있습니다. 여러분 모두 중국 당국에 의해 억류된 30여명의 탈북자들을 위해 기도해 오셨을 텐데, 중국에 탈북자 석방을 요구하는 국제적인 탄원에도 불구하고 모두 북송 되었습니다. 여기를 클릭하시면 이와 관련한 3월 9일자 CNN의 기사를 보실 수 있습니다. 그나마 희망적인 소식은 중국인들이 국제적인 압력에 민감히 반응하며 몇 달간 북경 내 다양한 나라의 영사관에 머물던 11명의 탈북자들이 한국으로 오는 것을 허락했다는 것입니다. 하지만 중국은 여전히 중국내 불법 거주중인 모든 탈북자들을 북송한다는 현재의 입장을 고수하고 있다는 것입니다. 3월에 북송된 탈북자들의 최종적인 운명이 어떠할 지 알 수 없지만 우리는 희망을 버리지 않습니다. 계속해서 이들을 위해서 기도해 주시기 바랍니다.


The big celebration is coming up!  April 15, Great Sun Day, will be the 100th anniversary of the birth of Kim Il Sung, grandfather to the present ruler, Kim Jong Un.  This is the target that Kim Jong Il had set for North Korea to be a "Great and Prosperous Nation."  We have reported in this space over the past year many of the special efforts being made to prepare for this celebration and the difficulty that those preparations have caused. As we get down to the wire, the pressure is on to make it a special celebration.  However, there appears to be increasing discontent with the preparations--long and cold rehearsals for public dancing, requirements for people to gather and turn in scrap iron (10kg or 22 pounds per person--double last year's quota), requirements for people to spend large amounts of money on paint and flowers for their houses, etc. People are complaining out loud (a rare phenomenon) that things are even more difficult under Kim Jong Un than under his father, Kim Jong Il.

큰 축제의 날이 다가 오고 있습니다. 4월 15일은 태양절로 현재 북한 통치자인 김정은의 할아버지인 김일성 탄생 100주년이 되는 일입니다. 김정일은 이 날이 북한의 “부국강성”을 위한 날이 되게 할 계획입니다. 우리는 그동안 이 지면을 통해서 북한이 벌이는 태양절을 축하하기 위한 특별한 행사와 준비하는 과정에서 초래된 여러가지 어려움에 대해서 알려 드렸습니다. 사건의 이면을 충분히 파헤쳐보면 태양절 축하를 위한 압력이 있음을 알 수 있습니다. 하지만, 추운 날씨가운데 이어지는 군무를 위한 리허설이나, 주민들에게 철을 모아오도록(일인당 10kg; 작년의 두 배 할당량)하거나, 자비를 들여서 자신의 집을 칠하고 꽃을 가꾸는 일 등 준비 작업이 만족스럽지는 못한 것 같습니다. 드물기는 하지만 아버지 김정일 체제에서보다 김정은 체제는 더욱 혹독하다는 불평의 소리가 나오고 있습니다.


While we had great hopes for a new food aid program from the US based on North Korea's agreement to end its nuclear program (as reported last month), those hopes are being dashed by the North's subsequent statement that they will launch a satellite to celebrate Kim Il Sung's centenary.  Most international governments see this as a thinly disguised attempt to carry out ballistic missile tests.  The North is refusing to stop the program and now the US is saying the food program is dead as a result.  The North continues to stir things up with other types of missile tests as well.  Pray for a breakthrough here.  The food really is needed and my own experience as a food monitor in North Korea convinced me of the validity and importance of the program.

북한의 핵무기개발 종식에 기초해 시작된 미국의 대북 식량원조는 모두에게 희망적인 소식이었으나, 최근 북한이 김일성 탄생 100주년을 축하하기 위해 위성을 발사한다는 소식에 암초에 부딪힌 듯 합니다. 대부분의 나라에서는 이것이 탄도 미사일 발사를 시험하기 위한 위장에 불과하다고 보고 있습니다. 북한은 핵무기 개발을 포기하지 않으려 하고, 이에 따라 미국은 식량원조는 없다고 말하고 있습니다. 북한은 계속해서 다양한 미사일 시험 발사를 통해 상황을 어렵게 하고 있습니다. 이 상황에 돌파구가 생기도록 기도합시다. 식량은 너무나 절실히 필요하고, 미국에서 식량원조 모니터로 일해 본 제 경험에 의하면 식량원조 프로그램은 북한 내에서 상당히 실효성이 있고 중요합니다.

* The River of Life School 생명의강 학교

We praise God for how he has been working out things at the school despite the fact that its principal, my wife Liz, is not there.  As most of you are aware, Liz is at our home in Connecticut where she is caring for my mother, Jane Torrey (more below).  Liz is in touch with the teachers at the school on a regular basis through email and weekly Skype sessions.  The teachers have really risen to the challenge as well.  God has assembled an outstanding faculty.  They are still young in many ways but have a deep commitment to the school and love the students.  They are hard working, very smart and dedicated to teaching from the Biblical world view and perspective.  We see that this is a year of building the faculty for the future and we are very excited to see it happening.  I had a wonderful time at the school a couple of days ago with the students and the teachers.  There is a lot these days that is d iscouraging but this visit was a real encouragement.  It filled my day with joy.

할렐루야! 제 아내인 리즈 교장선생님의 부재에도 하나님은 학교에서 선하게 일하고 계십니다. 여러분 모두 알고 계시듯이, 리즈 자매는 제 어머니 현 재인 사모님을 간호하기 위해 커네티컷의 우리 집에 머물고 있습니다. 리즈 자매는 이메일을 통해 교사들과 정기적으로 연락을 주고 받고, 매 주 스카이프로 화상통화도 하고 있습니다. 교사들은 모든 상황에 아주 잘 대처하고 있습니다. 하나님께서 이 기회를 통해 교사들 안에 최상의 팀웍을 형성해 가고 계십니다. 선생님들은 여러 면에 젊지만 학교에 헌신하고 있으며 학생들을 사랑합니다. 모두들 열심히 일하고 있고, 성경적인 세계관으로 교실 현장을 이끌어가고 있습니다. 우리는 올 한 해가 내년을 위해 교직원을 성장시키는 시간이 될 것으로 보고 있고, 그래서 앞으로 일어날 일에 대해 기대가 됩니다. 저는 이틀전에 교사들과 학생들과 아주 멋진 시간을 보냈습니다. 요즘 제게는 낙담되는 일들이 있는데, 이 날 학교에 다녀와서 아주 큰 격려가 되었고, 기쁨으로 충만한 날이었습니다.

Our school parents are also rallying and getting excited about learning more about this kind of education.  Their fears about whether or not their students are really learning things is less.  The mothers are meeting twice a month with our new teacher, Kay Hong, who has many years experience in Christian schooling.  She is teaching them about Christian or Biblical worldview education.  On those same Saturdays, a group of fathers are taking the students on various hikes, excursions or special sports events.  They all had a great day snow boarding at a local ski resort in February.  There is a lot of father son/daughter bonding going on

학부모님들은 이러한 교육에 대해 더 알아가는 것에 열의를 보이고 있습니다. 학생들이 실제 무엇을 배우고 있는 지에 대한 걱정도 줄어들었습니다. 어머니들은 그동안 기독교 학교에서 많은 경험을 쌓아오신 캐이 홍 선생님과 한 달에 두 번의 모임을 갖고 있습니다. 홍선생님은 기독교 교육 및 성경적 세계관 교육에 대해 부모 교육을 진행하고 있습니다. 같은 시간에 아버지들은 학생들을 데리고 등산이나, 현장체험 및 운동을 즐깁니다. 2월에는 스키장에서 스노우 보드를 타기도 했습니다. 부자간, 부녀간의 정을 돈독히 하는 다양한 활동이 계속되고 있습니다.


The big challenge ahead of us now is where we will be next year as we outgrow our current temporary space.  This is our biggest prayer concern at the moment.  It looks like we may need to find other, larger temporary quarters as we continue to move forward on our building program.  See below.  Pray with us that the Lord direct us and provide us the space we need.

현재 우리 앞에 놓인 도전은 현재의 협소한 캠퍼스를 떠나 내년에 어디로 갈 지 입니다.  이것이 현재의 가장 큰 기도제목입니다. 센터건축을 기대하고 있지만, 지금 당장이라도 좀 더 큰 임시 캠퍼스를 구해야 할 지 모르겠습니다. 아래를 참조해 주십시오. 주님께서 우리를 인도하시고, 우리가 필요한 공간을 허락하시도록 기도해 주시기 바랍니다.



* The Three Seas 삼수령

Last month, I reported on a number of changes in personnel that were pending at the Three Seas Community.  Well, change is right--just not completely what we anticipated.  The John Choi family, who were planning to leave in March for sabbatical have had to delay their plans until at least May. This is a bit of a frustration to them but we are glad to still have them with us.  Their son, Amos or Uigon, however, was quite excited because he had really anticipated entering The River of Life School as a middle school freshman this year.  He has been able to do that and is quite happy to be able to spend the first semester there.  The Elon Bae family, on the other hand, had to change their plans to come to the Ranch at the very last minute.  This was a great disappointment as we were expecting Brother Elon to take charge of our cattle raising department.  We are trusting the Lord that they are where God intends t hem to be and that we will be able to move forward without difficulty.  We do have a new family with us, Brother Zechariah and his wife Roseanne with their children who have already jumped in with both feet and are working hard.  There is another family that has applied to come as well.  In the meantime, we are getting ready to build another house for the community with special funds that we received.

지난달, 삼수령 공동체에서 일어나고 있는 인적 구성원의 다양한 변화에 대해서 말씀드렸습니다. 변화가 일어나고 있지만, 우리의 예상과는 완전히 다르게 일어나고 있습니다. 3월에 안식년을 출발하기로 계획했던 최 요한 형제 가족은 5월까지 출발이 연기되었습니다. 이 가족에게는 조금 실망스럽기도 했겠지만, 우리는 기쁘게 다시 함께 지내고 있습니다. 큰 아들 의건(아모스)이는 오히려 기뻐하기도 했습니다. 왜냐하면 바라던 대로 올 해 생명의강 학교에 입학하게 됐기 때문입니다. 의건이는 입학해서 첫 학기를 다닐 수 있는 것에 매우 기뻐하고 있습니다. 반면에 목장에 들어오기로 했던 배 엘론 형제 가정은 막판에 계획을 바꾸게 되었습니다. 우리는 엘론 형제에게 목장 책임을 맡기려 하고 있었기에 실망했지만, 주님께서 하나님이 원하시는 곳에 이 가정을 두기 원한다고 믿기에 어려움 없이 받아들였습니다. 사가랴형제와 로잔자매 부부와 두 아이들은 목장에 정착하여 열심히 생활하고 있습니다. 또 새로운 가정이 목장의 문을 두드리고 있습니다. 공동체를 위해 새로운 숙소를 지을 계획이 있고 필요한 자금도 준비되었습니다.


On the other hand... We still do not see ourselves very close to the start of construction on the Three Seas Center--planned home for The River of Life School.  We have the funds needed to finish up a land survey for the Forestry Department and other costs associated with gaining the construction permit. We had anticipated finishing this by last December but an early and heavy snow last fall prevented us from completing the survey.  We expect to get it done in April and get the permit soon.  However, we do not have the funds to actually start construction, to break ground.  I know that this is

God's project and His plan.  There are many reasons why building the Center is important for the school and for the work of preparing for the opening of North Korea. I am confident that we will be able to move forward and that God will gain the glory though this. We're just not sure how We desire your prayers your prayers for God's guidance and provision, that we will be able to begin construction soon and that the school will have its permanent home for the start of school a year from now.  We will keep you posted.  Thank you for your prayers and also your generosity.

반면에 생명의강 학교를 위해 시작해야 할 삼수령센터 건축은 진전이 별로 없습니다. 측량을 비롯한 산림청의 건축 허가를 받기 위해 필요한 몇 가지 작업을 수행할 자금은 있습니다. 작년 12월에 마칠 계획이었으나 폭설로 중단되어서 4월 들어 재개하면 곧 허가를 받게 될 것 같습니다. 하지만, 실제로 착공을 시작하기 위한 자금은 전혀 준비되지 않았습니다. 우리는 이것이 하나님의 일이며 계획이라고 알고 있습니다. 몇 가지 이유에서 센터건축은 학교를 위해서도 북한 개방을 준비하기 위해서도 매우 중요합니다. 저는 우리가 계속해서 앞으로 나아갈 수 있을 것으로 확신하며, 하나님께서 이 일을 통해서 기쁨을 얻으실 것으로 믿습니다. 건축을 곧 시작해서 학교가 내년 새 학기에는 새로운 캠퍼스에서 시작할 수 있도록 하나님의 인도하심과 공급하심을 위한 여러분의 기도가 절실합니다. 계속해서 소식을 전해 드리겠습니다. 기도와 헌금에 감사드립니다.



* Update on Jane Torrey 현 재인 사모님 소식

As I have already reported in a special bulletin, we successfully moved my mother to our home on March 7th.  Through the generosity of friends, we were able to charter a small plane to bring her.  This was a real necessity as the 15 hour drive would have been impossible and commercial flights with plane changes and other factors would have been extremely stressful.  The pilot told us that he was amazed at how smooth the flight went.  It is extremely rare that a 3 1/2 hour flight would be almost totally without turbulence.  As I have written before, I could picture angels perched on our wings as we flew.

이미 알려드렸듯이 어머니께서는 지난 3월 7일 무사히 저희 집에 도착하셨습니다. 친구들이 베풀어준 호의로 경비행기를 대여해서 어머니를 모실 수 있었습니다. 자동차로는 15시간이 걸리고, 일반 비행기는 여러 변화 요인들이 있어서 스트레스를 유발하기 때문에, 경비행기는 너무나 실질적인 필요였습니다. 조종사는 비행이 얼마나 순조롭게 이루어졌는지 놀라워했고, 이례적으로 난기류도 겪지 않고 3시간 반 만에 도착했습니다. 전에도 썼지만, 천사들이 우리 날개 위에 앉아있는 것만 같았습니다.


The sad news is that my mother's condition is deteriorating rapidly.  We have to provide 24-hour care.  This is shared by Liz, my sister, Yancey, and an aid who comes for the night hours.  Mother is no longer getting out of bed and has an ever more difficult time speaking.  We thank the Lord that she has no pain but she does have difficulty breathing and her level of anxiety grows as the tumor grows.  I return to her side on April 23rd unless the situation warrents me going sooner.  She still enjoys people writing to her but it is very stressful to receive visitors now.

슬픈 소식은 어머니 상황이 급속도록 나빠지고 있다는 것입니다. 24시간 내내 간병이 필요해서 제 아내 리즈자매, 여동생 옌시 자매와 야간 간호를 위한 도우미가 번갈아 가며 이 일을 감당하고 있습니다. 어머니는 침대에서 나오실 수 없고 말씀하시기가 더욱 어려워 졌습니다. 그래도 주님께 감사드리는 것은 어머니께서 종양에 따른 통증을 못 느끼시고, 호흡곤란 및 종양이 커질 때 심했던 불안감이 사라졌다는 것입니다. 급한 상황이 발생하지 않는 한 저는 4월 23일 어머니께 돌아갈 계획입니다. 어머니는 여전히 사람들이 보내주는 소식을 즐거워하시지만, 이제 손님 방문은 어렵게 되었습니다.

Thank you for your ongoing prayers for Mother and for our family.  Please keep Jesus Abbey and the Three Seas Community in your prayers as well. The folks here love her dearly and deeply desire to be with her, helping in her care.  She left the Abbey one day a year ago expecting to return within days.  No one realized that she would never make it back.  A number of members of the community were able to visit her in the hospital in Seoul but, even when we took her to the States for treatment, none of us were concerned about not being able to be with her again.  We were all so sure that she would be back and in good shape by the end of the summer.  That was before we learned about the brain tumor and before she lost the use of her right side.  It has been difficult for the community.  We look to the Lord for comfort.  Your prayers are important.

저희 어머니와 가족을 위해 계속해서 기도해 주셔서 감사 드립니다. 예수원과 삼수령을 위해서도 계속해서 기도해 주시기를 부탁 드립니다. 모든 공동체 식구들이 어머니를 깊이 사랑하고 곁에서 간호하고 싶어하고 있습니다. 하지만 어머니는 1년전 어느 날 예수원을 떠난 이래 다시 돌아오실 기약이 없습니다. 많은 공동체 식구들이 서울에 있는 동안 병문안을 했고, 치료를 위해 미국으로 모셨을 때도 누구도 어머니를 다시 뵐 수 없다고는 생각지 못했습니다. 작년 여름에는 어머니가 건강한 모습으로 돌아오실 것으로 기대했습니다. 그 때는 뇌종양이나 우측 반신 불수에 대해 전혀 모를 때였습니다. 주님의 평안을 구합니다. 또한 여러분의 기도를 요청합니다.
