다니엘 3:14-20, 24-25, 28
14 느부갓네살이 물었다. "사드락, 메삭, 아벳느고, 너희는 내가 세운 금신상 앞에 절을 하지 않고 내가 위하는 신을 섬기지 않았다니, 그게 사실이냐?
and Nebuchadnezzar said to them, "Is it true, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, that you do not serve my gods or worship the image of gold I have set up?
15 이제라도 나팔, 피리, 거문고, 사현금, 칠현금, 퉁수 등 갖가지 악기 소리가 나는 대로 곧 엎드리어 내가 만든 신상 앞에 절할 마음이 없느냐? 절하지 않으면 활활 타는 화덕 속에 던질 터인데, 그래도 좋으냐? 내 손에서 너희를 구해 줄 신이 과연 있겠느냐?"
Now when you hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipes and all kinds of music, if you are ready to fall down and worship the image I made, very good. But if you do not worship it, you will be thrown immediately into a blazing furnace. Then what god will be able to rescue you from my hand?"
16 사드락과 메삭과 아벳느고가 느부갓네살왕에게 대답했다. "저희는 임금님께서 물으시는 말씀에 대답할 마음이 없습니다. Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego replied to the king, "O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter.
17 저희가 섬기는 하나님께서 저희를 구해 주실 힘이 있으시면 임금님께서 소신들을 활활 타는 화덕에 집어 넣으셔도 저희를 거기에서 구해 주실 것입니다.
If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to save us from it, and he will rescue us from your hand, O king.
18 비록 그렇게 되지 않더라도 저희는 임금님의 신을 섬기거나 임금님께서 세우신 금신상 앞에 절할 수 없습니다." But even if he does not, we want you to know, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up."
19 느부갓네살은 사드락과 메삭과 아벳느고의 말을 듣고는 금방 안색이 달라지며 노기에 차서 화덕의 불을 여느 때보다 일곱 배나 뜨겁게 지피도록 하고,
Then Nebuchadnezzar was furious with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, and his attitude toward them changed. He ordered the furnace heated seven times hotter than usual
20 군인들 가운데서도 힘센 장정들을 뽑아 사드락과 메삭과 아벳느고를 묶어 활활 타는 화덕에 집어 넣으라고 명하였다. and commanded some of the strongest soldiers in his army to tie up Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego and throw them into the blazing furnace.
21 사람들은 그들을 도포와 속옷 등 옷을 입고 관을 쓴채로 묶어서 활활 타는 화덕 속에 집어넣었다.
So these men, wearing their robes, trousers, turbans and other clothes, were bound and thrown into the blazing furnace.
22 왕명이 그만큼 급했던 것이다. 화덕이 너무나 달아 있었으므로 사드락과 메삭과 아벳느고를 넣던 사람들이 불길에 타 죽고 말았다. The king's command was so urgent and the furnace so hot that the flames of the fire killed the soldiers who took up Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego,
23 사드락과 메삭과 아벳느고 세 사람은 꽁꽁 묶인 채 불타는 화덕 속에 던져졌다.
and these three men, firmly tied, fell into the blazing furnace.
24 그런데 느부갓네살왕이 깜짝 놀랄 일이 생겼다. 그는 벌떡 일어나 측근들에게 물었다. "꽁꽁 묶어서 화덕에 집어넣은 것이 세 명 아니었더냐?" 그들이 대답했다. "임금님, 그렇습니다." 그들은 불길 가운데를 걸으면서 하나님을 찬양하고 주님께 찬미를 들였다.
Then King Nebuchadnezzar leaped to his feet in amazement and asked his advisers, "Weren't there three men that we tied up and threw into the fire?" They replied, "Certainly, O king."
25 "그런데 네 사람이 아무 탈 없이 화덕 속에서 거닐고 있으니, 어찌된 일이냐? 저 네째 사람의 모습은 신의 모습을 닮았구나" 하면서 아자리야는 불 속에 우뚝 서서 입을 열어 이렇게 노래하였다.
He said, "Look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods."
26 느부갓네살은 활활 타는 화덕 어귀에 가서 이렇게 외쳤다. "사드락과 메삭과 아벳느고야, 지극히 높으신 하나님을 섬기는 자들아 어서 나오너라." 사드락과 메삭과 아벳느고가 화덕에서 나온 다음 우리 조상들의 하나님이시며 공경하올 주님, 찬미받으소서. 당신의 이름이 영원히 찬미를 받으소서.
Nebuchadnezzar then approached the opening of the blazing furnace and shouted, "Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, servants of the Most High God, come out! Come here!" So Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego came out of the fire,
27 지방관들과 대신들, 총독들, 왕의 측근들이 모여 와 그들을 살펴보니, 몸이 불에 데기는커녕 머리카락 하나 그슬리지 않았고 도포도 눋지 않았으며 불길이 닿은 냄새조차 나지 않았다. 당신께서 우리에게 하신 모든 일이 옳았으며, 당신의 모든 약속은 어김없이 이루어졌사오며 당신의 길은 곧바르며 당신의 심판은 언제나 올바르옵니다.
and the satraps, prefects, governors and royal advisers crowded around them. They saw that the fire had not harmed their bodies, nor was a hair of their heads singed; their robes were not scorched, and there was no smell of fire on them.
28 "사드락과 메삭과 아벳느고가 섬기는 신이야말로 찬양받으실 분이구나" 하며 느부갓네살은 외쳤다. "저들의 하나님께서, 어명을 어기면서까지 목숨 걸고 당신만을 믿고 저희의 신 아닌 다른 신 앞에서는 절하지도, 섬기지도 않는 이 신하들을 천사를 보내시어 구해 내셨구나. 당신께서 우리에게 내리신, 그리고 우리조상들의 거룩한 도시 예루살렘에 내리신, 모든 징벌에 있어서 당신의 판결은 옳았습니다. 당신께서 우리에게 이런 징벌을 내리신 것은 우리의 죄 때문이고 우리는 당신의 징벌을 받아 마땅하옵니다.
Then Nebuchadnezzar said, "Praise be to the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, who has sent his angel and rescued his servants! They trusted in him and defied the king's command and were willing to give up their lives rather than serve or worship any god except their own God.

요한복음 8:31-42
31 예수께서는 당신을 믿는 유다인들에게 이렇게 말씀하셨다. "너희가 내 말을 마음에 새기고 산다면 너희는 참으로 나의 제자이다. To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.
32 그러면 너희는 진리를 알게 될 것이며 진리가 너희를 자유롭게 할 것이다."
Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."
33 그들은 이 말씀을 듣고 "우리는 아브라함의 후손이고, 아무한데도 종살이를 한 적이 없는데 선생님은 우리더러 자유를 얻을 것이라고 하시니 어떻게 된 일입니까?" 하고 따졌다.
They answered him, "We are Abraham's descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?"
34 예수께서는 이렇게 대답하셨다. "정말 잘들어 두어라. 죄를 짓는 사람은 누구나 다 죄의 노예이다.
Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.
35 노예는 자기가 있는 집에서 끝내 살 수 없지만 아들은 영원히 그 집에서 살수 있다.
Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever.
36 그러므로 아들이 너희에게 자유를 준다면 너희는 참으로 자유로운 사람이 될 것이다.
So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
37 너희는 아브라함의 후손임에 틀림없다. 그런데도 너희는 나를 죽이려고 한다. 너희에게 내 말을 받아들일 마음이 없기 때문이다. I know you are Abraham's descendants. Yet you are ready to kill me, because you have no room for my word.
38 나는 나의 아버지께서 보여 주신 것을 말하고 너희는 너희의 아비가 일러 준대로 하고 있다."
I am telling you what I have seen in the Father's presence, and you do what you have heard from your father."
39 그들은 "우리 조상은 아브라함입니다" 하며 예수께 대들었다. 예수께서 "만일 너희가 아브라함의 자손이라면 아브라함이 한 대로 할 것이다. "Abraham is our father," they answered. "If you were Abraham's children," said Jesus, "then you would do the things Abraham did.
40 그런데 너희는 하나님에게서 들은 진리를 전하는 나를 죽이려고 한다. 아브라함은 이런 짓을 하지 않았다. As it is, you are determined to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham did not do such things.
41 그러니 너희는 너희의 아비가 한 대로 하고 있는 것이다" 하고 말씀하시자 그들은 "우리는 사생아가 아닙니다! 우리 아버지는 오직 하나님 한 분이십니다" 하고 말하였다.
You are doing the things your own father does." "We are not illegitimate children," they protested. "The only Father we have is God himself."
42 예수께서 또 이렇게 말씀하셨다. "내가 하나님에게서 나와 여기 와 있으니 만일 하나님께서 너희의 아버지시라면 너희는 나를 사랑했을 것이다. 나는 내 마음대로 온 것이 아니고 하나님께서 보내셔서 왔다. Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and now am here. I have not come on my own; but he sent me.
