Before getting on to news and reports, I need to apologize for this calendar being late, especially the Korean version.  February is a short month so it often takes a little more organization to get things out on time.  In addition, we are in the process of bringing my mother, Jane Torrey, from Cascades Verdae in Greenville, SC to our home in Connecticut.  This has meant that I came from Korea to the US this week--always lose a couple of days of productive work that way.  Things are set to bring her to Connecticut on Wednesday, March 7.  After that, Liz, will be with her to oversee her care while I go back to Korea.  As you can imagine, a lot of other things have fallen to a lower priority.

새로운 소식을 전하기 앞서 3월 기도달력이 늦어진 것에 대해 사과 드리고 싶습니다. (한국어판은 좀 더 늦어졌습니다.) 2월이 짧고 제 시간에 모든 것을 마치기 위해서 좀 더 많은 조정이 필요했습니다. 게다가 제 어머니 현 재인 여사를 사우스캐롤라이나 그린빌의 캐스케이드 베르데에서 커네티컷의 저희 집으로 옮겨 모시는 중이라 바빴습니다. 그래서 저는 이번 주간 한국에서 나와 미국에 머물고 있습니다. 항상 그렇듯이 일을 제대로 하기 위해서는 시차문제로 이틀은 소모됩니다. 모든 것이 준비되어서 3월 7일 수요일에 어머니는 커네티컷에 오시게 될 예정입니다. 그 후 리즈 자매가 계속해서 어머니를 간호하겠습니다. 예상하시는 대로 이 일이 가장 우선순위입니다.



We are deeply grateful to God for this special time that we will have with her as she spends her final months with us in our home.  Please keep her in your prayers.  She still struggles with heightened levels of anxiety that we think are directly attributable to the growing (slowly, thank the Lord!) brain tumor.  We appreciate your prayers for her and for us during this time.

우리는 하나님께서 이 특별한 시간을 준비해 주셔서 어머니께서 저희 집에서 마지막 생애를 보내게 하신 것에 깊이 감사하고 있습니다. 어머니를 위해서 계속해서 기도해 주시기 바랍니다. 어머니는 뇌종양이 느리지만 서서히 자라고 있습니다. 이로 인해 불안 수위도 높아지고 있어서 이것과 싸우고 계십니다. 이 기간 동안 어머니와 우리를 위해서 기도해 주시면 고맙겠습니다.

In the process of moving from the Three Seas Ranch to Jesus Abbey (which Liz and did in February--along with everything else...) and getting ready for my current trip to the US, I came across a collection of email addresses that we had collected several years ago at a North Korea School that we put on in Ann Arbor, Michigan.  I discovered that these addresses had never been entered in our mailing list for which I apologize! I want to welcome all of you who attended that school and are just now starting to get the prayer calendar and our news.  I will add a bit of background to each of the reports below for your sake.  If you want to know more, always feel free to email me.

저희 부부가 지난 2월 삼수령목장에서 예수원에서 이사하고, 제 미국행을 준비하는 과정에서 저는 우연히 몇 년 전 미시간주 앤 아버에서 열렸던 북한학교 때 받은 이메일 리스트를 발견했습니다. 그 동안 이분들께 소식을 드리지 못한 것을 사과 드리고, 그 당시 북한학교에 참석했던 모든 분들을 저희 뉴스레터를 보내는 새로운 식구로 환영하고 앞으로 매달 기도달력과 뉴스레터를 보내드리겠습니다. 여러분을 위해 각 소식마다 그에 따른 배경을 첨가했습니다. 더 자세히 알기 원하시면 자유롭게 제게 이메일을 보내주시기 바랍니다.



The Situation in the North 북한의 상황

Many of you will be aware of the recent arrest of a large number of North Korean refugees in China and their threatened repatriation to North Korea.  We are not sure if a few have been repatriated already but we are confident that, as of this writing, most have not.  The international outcry against China's policy concerning North Korean refugees (commonly known as defectors) appears to be effective in keeping them in China.  We do need to keep up our prayers for them and pressure on the Chinese government. We expect that as soon as things die down in the worl d news that China will quietly send them back to North Korea where they will likely face torture, imprisonment and possible death.  Pray that, instead of sending them back, China will release them.

많은 분들이 알고 계시듯이 최근 중국에서 다수의 탈북자들이 체포됐고 북송의 위험에 처해 있습니다. 이미 몇 명은 북한에 돌려보내진 듯 하고, 아마 이 글을 쓰는 즈음에는 대다수가 송환됐을 것입니다. 중국의 탈북자 정책에 대해 국제적인 비난여론이 중국에서는 효력이 있는 듯 합니다. 우리도 이를 위해 계속해서 기도하고 중국 정부에 압박을 가해야 합니다. 아마도 여론이 진정되어 세계뉴스에서 중국 내 탈북자 정책에 관한 뉴스가 사라지면 중국은 조용히 탈북자들을 북한으로 보낼 것입니다. 그리고 탈북자들이 그곳에서 맞는 결과는 고문과 투옥 그리고 죽음일 것입니다. 중국이 탈북자들을 북송하지 말고 석방하도록 기도해 주십시오.



In the meantime, the North is making use of this situation to increase fear of defection within North Korea claiming that the refugees have been returned and severely punished.  This is part of the new regime's efforts to curb defection and capture defectors in China. On February 22nd, North Korea sent over 50 National Security Agency agents into China to locate and capture North Korean defectors.  The NK government has been dealing more harshly with defectors ever since Kim Jong Il died in December so keep them in your prayers--those in China seeking to get to South Korea or elsewhere and those who are trapped inside.  

그 동안 북한은 이러한 상황을 이용해 북한내에서 탈북에 대한 두려움을 가중시키고 탈북자들은 북송되면 엄벌에 처한다고 경고하고 있습니다. 이는 탈북을 규제하고 중국내 탈북자들을 사로잡기 위한 새 정부의 노력의 일환입니다. 2월 22일 북한은 중국에 파견했던 50명이 넘는 국가 안보위 소속 직원들을 소환해 탈북자 색출을 위해 재배치했습니다. 북한 정부는 지난 12월 김정일 사후 탈북자들을 더욱 가혹하게 다루고 있습니다. 기도해주십시오. 중국에 머물며 남한이 기타 다른 지역으로 가기를 기다리는 탈북자들을 위해서 기도해 주십시오.



While all this is going on the North is so desperate to be able to distribute food by "Great Sun Day" on April 15th, the 100th anniversary of the birth of Kim Il Sung, the day they want to reveal the success of their campaign to become a "great and prosperous" nation, that the government is issuing more travel permits to China.  The catch is that you have to return to North Korea within 40 days and bring one ton of food with you.

북한의 모든 상황은 너무나 절박해서 4월 15일 김일성 주석 탄생 100주년이 되는 “태양절”에도 식량을 나눠줄 수 없는 상황입니다. 정부는 이날 위대한 조국의 번영을 드러내고자 하지만, 여력이 되지 않아 오히려 중국으로의 여행을 허가해 주고 있습니다. 40일 이내에 북한으로 돌아올 때 중국에서부터 1톤의 식량을 가져오도록 하기 위함입니다.



On a lighter note, we have just received word that North Korea has agreed to suspend nuclear weapons research, development and testing in exchange for the US sending 240,000 tons of food aid per year.  Of course, the North will spin this agreement for domestic propaganda but I see at least three positive affects for which we should thank the Lord. First is, of course, the halt to NK's nuclear program, the second is that food will be delivered to those desperately in need and the third is that through the food aid program, despite all the propaganda, ordinary people in the North will learn a little bit more about the outside world.  I worked as a food monitor in North Korea for several months in 2008 for the US food assistance program.  I am confident the food will get to where it is intended to go and know from personal experience that a lot of folks will come into contact with Americans and others who will show them a face of the world that the propaganda cannot hide.

좀 가벼운 소식으로는 북한이 미국으로부터 매 년 24만톤의 식량 원조를 받고 핵무기 발전을 멈추기로 양해각서에 서명한 것입니다. 물론 이것조차도 북한은 국내 선전문구로 활용하겠지만, 제가 보기에도 여기에는 주님께 감사할 만한 세 가지 긍정적이 효과가 있습니다. 가장 감사한 것은 무엇보다 핵 확산을 멈춘다는 것입니다. 둘째는 절망적인 북한 주민들이 식량을 얻을 수 있다는 것입니다. 마지막으로 식량 원조를 통해서, 이를 선전으로 사용한다 해도, 북한의 주민들은 외부세계에 대해 조금이나마 알게 될 것입니다. 지난 2008년 저는 미국 식량원조 프로그램의 일환으로 북한에 몇 개월간 머물며 식량 배급을 감독하는 일을 했습니다. 제 경험을 통해 확신하건 데 식량은 필요로 하는 사람들에게 전달될 것이고, 많은 주민들이 미국인들 및 다른 외국인들과 접촉해서 북한의 선전으로도 감출 수 없는 외부 세계의 얼굴을 보게 될 것입니다.

The River of Life School 생명의강 학교

The first day of school is upon us!  The third year of The River of Life School begins on Friday, March 2nd.  Having started with first and second year of middle school in March 2010 and adding third year last year we are now starting high school!  The mission of The River of Life School is to prepare "the Unification Generation".  These young people will grow up to inherit the divisions of Korea.  We believe that God has a special call on them to heal the divisions, the wounds and rifts that have caused so much suffering in both North and South Korea.  Through providing a good education based on Biblical values and world view, an education provided in the context of love and community free from the excessive focus on competition that plagues South Korean education, we intend to equip our students to take their place in God's plan for a unified Korea and the building of a new society.  We are working towards the restoration of the family, of education and of the nation.  It is a small beginning with a handful of students for a huge job but we believe that God will use this school as we are obedient to His direction.

드디어 개학일이 다가왔습니다. 생명의강 학교 개교 이래 세번째 해가 3월 2일 금요일에 시작됐습니다. 2010년 중등 1, 2학년 과정으로 시작해서 작년에 3학년이 늘었고, 올해는 고등학교 과정을 신설하게 됐습니다. 생명의강 학교의 사명은 “통일세대”를 키워내는 것입니다. 이 땅의 청소년들은 분단의 조국 현실을 물려받게 되어 있습니다. 우리는 하나님께서 이들에게 남한과 북한 모두에게 고통을 주는 상처와 깊은 간격을 메우고 분단을 치유할 소명을 주셨다고 믿습니다. 생명의강 학교는 성경적 세계관에 근거해서 양질의 교육을 제공하고 남한 교육을 마비시키고 있는 경쟁구도에서 자유로운 공동체라는 토양에서 사랑으로 학생들을 교육합니다. 이를 통해 우리 학생들이 통일한국과 새로운 사회 건설을 위한 하나님의 계획 가운데 자신들의 역할을 찾아가도록 준비시키려 합니다. 우리 학교는 가정과 나라와 이 나라의 교육의 회복을 위해 힘쓰고 있습니다. 이 거대한 일을 하기에 우리는 작고 미약한 시작이지만, 우리가 하나님의 뜻에 순종할 때 하나님께서 이 학교를 사용하실 것을 믿습니다.



We have an opening enrollment of 28 students and three new full-time teachers as well as one who was part-time last year coming on board full-time this year.  We also have a new driver who will also be doing some teaching as well.  Our wonderful administrative assistant last year, Esther Oh, has left the school to join her new husband (married in February) in his ministry in Seoul.  We sent her off with much love and great joy as well as a few tears.  The great challenge facing the school right now is that Liz Torrey, who is the principal, is returning to the States to care for my mother, Jane Torrey.  Liz will stay in close contact with the school and retain full responsibility for oversight while, at the same time, looking to the rest of the faculty to take on greater responsibility.  We are confident that they are rising to the challenge.  The first Family Day of the new school year is on Saturday, the 3rd .  Liz will meet with the students, parents and the faculty then before returning to the US on Monday, the 5th.  Everyone has been most encouraging to us as we have had to make major changes in our plans so that we can care for my mother.  We are deeply grateful to all for their encouragement and prayers.

올해는 신입생을 포함 28명의 학생이 등록했고, 작년에 파트로 근무하시던 분이 정교사로 오신 것을 비롯 세 분의 신임 정교사들이 더 오셨습니다. 또 통학버스를 운행해 주시는 새로운 선생님이 오셔서 운행뿐 아니라 수업도 맡아주십니다. 작년에 학교의 행정업무를 훌륭하게 맡아 주었던 오 에스더 선생님은 결혼을 위해 학교를 떠나 (지난 2월 결혼) 남편의 사역지인 서울에 머물게 되었습니다. 우리 모두는 서운함의 눈물도 있었지만 사랑과 기쁨으로 에스더 선생님을 환송했습니다. 현재 학교의 가장 큰 변화는 리즈 토레이 교장선생님이 제 어머니 현 재인 여사의 간호를 위해 미국으로 떠난다는 사실입니다. 리즈 교장선생님은 미국에 머무는 동안에도 학교와 긴밀히 연락하며, 교직원들을 독려하고 학교를 돌아보는 책임을 충실히 감당해 낼 것입니다. 우리는 교직원들이 자신들의 임무를 충분히 해 낼 것을 확신합니다. 생명의강 학교 첫 번째 가족의 날은 3월 3일 토요일에 있습니다. 리즈 교장선생님 5일 출국을 앞두고 학생들 및 학부모와 교사들과 모두 함께 만나는 자리입니다. 모든 분들이 제 어머니 간호를 위해 중요한 결정을 내려야 할 때 저희에게 큰 격려를 주셨습니다. 이 분들의 기도와 격려에 깊이 감사드립니다.



The Three Seas 삼 수령

As we mentioned last month, there are some major changes occurring in the Three Seas community.  Liz and I have moved to Jesus Abbey but I will be back at the Ranch a couple times a week whenever I am in Korea to continue to guide the work there.  We are grateful for funds received that we can use to build a second new home for a community family in the spring.  Last fall, we were able to build the first of three that the Forestry Department authorized last year.  It is a beautiful warm and attractive home that Brother Paul Lee, his wife, Sister Rose Virginia, and their two children are enjoying.

지난달에 알려드린 대로 삼수령 공동체에 몇가지 변화가 있습니다. 리즈자매와 저는 예수원으로 이사했습니다. 물론 삼수령 사역을 위해 저는 일 주일에 한 두 번은 목장을 방문할 계획입니다. 감사한 것은 공동체를 위해 올 봄 새로운 관리사를 지을 수 있는 돈이 준비된 것입니다. 작년 가을 산림청에서 세 채의 관리사를 허락한 이후 첫 번째 관리사를 완공했습니다. 따뜻하고 아름다운 새 집에서 이 바울 형제와 로즈 버지니아 자매 부부와 두 자녀가 살고 있습니다.



We are looking forward to Brother Elon Bae, his wife, Sister Ezer, and their two young ones moving in this month.  They were with us at the Ranch several years ago, went to Jesus Abbey and are now back. Brother Elon will take responsibility for the cattle.  Brother Annan Cho, who has been doing this up to now will focus on beef sales.  His wife, Sister Priscilla, who faithfully translates my news letters and the prayer calendar, will take on some additional responsibilities in the community as Sister Jecoliah leaves with her family (husband Brother John Choi and children) for their sabbatical.  We now have close to 80 head of cattle!

또 이번 달에 배 엘론 형제와 이 에제르 자매 부부와 두 자녀가 삼수령 목장으로 옵니다. 이들은 몇 년전 목장에 살다가 예수원에 갔고, 이제 다시 돌아옵니다. 엘론형제는 목장을 책임지고, 현재 책임자인 조 아난 형제는 한우판매에 좀 저 집중할 계획입니다. 그 아내 프리실라 자매는 현재 매 달 기도달력과 뉴스레터를 번역하고 있는데, 최 요한 형제와 제꼴리아 자매 가정이 안식년을 맞아서 공동체 책임을 맡게 되었습니다. 이제 소는 80마리에 달하고 있습니다.



Another family moving out to the Three Seas from the Abbey is Brother Zechariah Chun, his wife, Sister Roseanne and their children.  He will be taking over the work related to building the Three Seas Center from Brother John Choi.

예수원에서 목장으로 한 가정이 더 오게 되었는데 바로 천 사가랴 형제와 로잔 자매 부부와 두 자녀입니다. 사가랴 형제는 그 동안 최요한 형제가 맡아오던 센터 관련 업무를 담당할 예정입니다.



We expect to finish the final survey work needed to get our building permits for the Center as soon as spring comes.  This was suspended in November when a heavy snow put a stop to the work.  The snow is still deep in the woods but we do see it starting to melt.  Once we complete this survey, we expect to get the building permit that will allow us to start construction on the first phase of the Center, the part that will house The River of Life School as it completely outgrows the current temporary space in the old Hasami Village elementary school building.  We will have the construction permit but we do not, as of this writing, have the funds we need to begin construction.  However, we are moving forward in obedience and wait with some excitement to see how God will provide.  We will keep you posted.  Thank you for your prayers!  And many thanks to all of you who have contribute d to our building campaign and our general operational needs.

봄이 오면 센터 건축을 위해 필요한 마지막 측량을 마칠 것으로 기대하고 있습니다. 작년 11월 폭설 이후 계속되는 눈으로 측량은 중단된 상태입니다. 숲속에는 여전히 눈이 쌓여있지만 조금씩 녹고 있습니다. 측량이 끝나면 센터 건축의 1단계에 착공할 수 있는 허가를 받을 수 있을 것입니다. 이렇게 되면 현재 하사미 분교의 좁은 공간에서 수업하는 생명의강 학교를 새로운 캠퍼스로 이전할 수 있게 됩니다. 공사허가는 이미 받았지만 현재 이를 진행하기 위한 자금은 없는 상황입니다. 하지만 우리는 하나님께서 공급하실 것을 기대하며 순종으로 진행할 것입니다. 여러분께 계속해서 소식을 알려 드리겠습니다. 기도에 감사드립니다! 그동안 모금운동 및 학교 운영을 위해서 헌금해주신 모든 분들께 감사드립니다.



Update on Jane Torrey 현재인 여사 소식

As you will have seen above, Jane Torrey is moving to our home in Ellington, CT where Liz, along with our son, Reuben, will be caring for her.  We will also be hiring additional help.  She is receiving hospice care as all cancer therapy has not been able to shrink the tumor in her brain.  She has no use of her right arm, hand and leg.  She is confined to a wheel chair when out of bed.  Her greatest struggle at this time is difficulty in expressing her thoughts and heightened levels of anxiety. All of these issues are the direct affect of the tumor.  We do not know for how much longer we will have her with us but we are thankful for each day.  She is deeply grateful to all the many people who have been writing to her.  We also want to express sincere appreciation to those who have helped with her financial needs during this time.

위에서 보신대로 현 재인 여사는 커네티컷 엘링턴의 우리집으로 이사해서, 제 아내 리즈 자매와 아들 르우벤이 함께 어머니를 돌볼 것입니다. 이 일을 도울 사람도 고용할 계획입니다. 어머니는 현재 항암치료가 뇌종양을 줄이는데 전혀 효과가 없기 때문에 호스피스간호만 받고 계신 상황입니다. 오른쪽 팔과 손, 다리는 전혀 사용하실 수 없습니다. 침대에 있을 때를 제외하고는 늘 휠체어에 앉아 있어야 합니다. 요즘 어머니는 의사표현을 하는데 있어서 어려움을 겪고 있고, 불안감이 높아진 상태입니다. 이 모두가 뇌종양에 따른 직접적인 결과입니다. 우리는 얼마나 더 오래 어머니가 살아계실 지 알 수 없지만 매일 매일이 너무나 감사합니다. 어머니께서는 편지를 보내 주시는 모든 분들께 깊이 깊이 감사하고 계십니다. 이 기간 동안 어머니의 재정적인 필요를 채워주신 모든 분들께 머리숙여 깊이 감사드리고 싶습니다.
