The Situation in the North 북한의 상황
The situation in North Korea continues to deteriorate. The food situation seems to be increasingly precarious. Some of the latest information is that the potato harvest has been particularly small because of droughts and lack of fertilizer. Potatoes are critical for carrying the populace through the summer until the corn harvest. There have also been recent reports, including new video footage smuggled out, that show even the military is suffering from lack of food. This is a powerful indicator of how bad it is because of the strong North Korean focus on the military first. The footage that is coming out is every bit as grim as that from the late '90s and early 2000s. The government is increasing the crackdown on "anti-socialist" behavior. The irony is that this very crackdown appears to be increasing the amount of such behavior. This is nothing new as the government's suspicion of many people was that actual factor or final straw that led them to defect. Here is a two-part article about this--part one and part two. One of the most amazing recent develpments is that serious anti-Kim Jong Il grafitti has shown up in Pyongyang. The search for the person who expressed his opionion shut down the city of Pyongyang for several days. At this point, they have still not caught the culprit. That this sort of thing should happen in the capital is a strong indicator of the continuing deterioration of matters in the North. Please keep the people of North Korea in your prayers every day.
북한의 상황이 계속 나빠지고 있습니다. 식량문제는 훨씬 불안해 진 듯 합니다. 최근 들리는 소식은 가뭄과 비료 부족으로 인해서 감자 수확이 아주 적다고 합니다. 감자는 다수의 주민들에게 옥수수 수확까지 여름을 견디게 하는 중요한 작물입니다. 심지어 군대도 식량이 부족하다는 뉴스가 담긴 비디오가 흘러나오기도 했습니다. 북한이 군대를 최우선으로 여기는 원칙을 고려할 때 이는 상황이 아주 나쁘다는 것을 보여줍니다. 비디오로 나오는 모든 장면은 90년대 말부터 2000년대 초반까지 생기 없는 모습 일색입니다. 북한 정부는 반사회적인 행동을 더욱 강하게 규제하고 있지만, 그럴수록 반사회적인 행동은 더욱 늘어나고 있는 실정입니다. 새로울 것도 없지만 정부가 많은 주민을 감시하기 때문에 오히려 북한 주민들이 마지막 지푸라기라도 잡으며 탈북을 결행하게 하는 실제적인 요인이 되고 있습니다. 이에 대한 두 부분으로 이루어진 기사가 있으니 보십시오. 최근에 보이는 가장 큰 발전은 평양에 김정일을 반대하는 낙서가 등장했다는 것입니다. 이 그림을 그린 사람을 찾기 위해서 며칠간 평양이 봉쇄되기도 했지만, 아직 범인은 잡히지 않았습니다. 수도 평양에서도 이런 일이 일어나고 있다는 것은 그만큼 북한의 상황이 악화되고 있다는 증거입니다. 여러분의 기도 가운데 북한 주민들을 계속해서 기억하며 기도해주십시오.

A number of you responded concerning our need for new office space in Seoul. We have secured a good space for the office work and our Seoul-based administrative worker, Esther Park. She will be enjoying more fellowship with friends than was true in our last location where she was fairly isolated. We still have not solved the problem of a regular place to stay whenever we have to go to Seoul; however, there are a couple possibilities for the future. I think that one or another will work out by the end of the year. In the meantime, we will be looking at less-expensive overnight lodgings of one sort or another. We would appreciate your continued prayers for this.
서울 사무소 이전에 대해서 관심을 갖고 반응해 주신 많은 분들께 감사 드립니다. 일단 서울 사무실에서 일하는 박 에스더 자매가 근무할 수 있는 공간은 마련했고, 새로운 사무실은 교제할 수 있는 친구들도 있어서 에스더 자매가 좋아하고 있습니다. 이전 사무실에서는 거의 혼자서만 일해서 사실 고립돼 있었습니다. 여전히 우리가 서울로 출장 가게 될 경우 머물 곳은 찾지 못했습니다만, 한 두 가지 가능성을 고려해 보고 있습니다. 올 연말까지는 방안을 찾을 생각입니다. 그 때까지는 출장 시 머물 저렴한 숙박시설을 찾아야 합니다. 기도해 주신 분들께 감사 드립니다.
I would like also to thank everyone for your prayers for my mother, Jane Torrey. She continues to receive care at an excellent and beautiful facility in Greenville, SC. The wound on her leg continues to heal but, because of her age, it is a very slow process. It looks like she will be receiving treatment at least through the end of July. Please continue to hold her in your prayers.
저희 어머니 재인 토레이 여사를 위해서 기도해 주신 분들께도 감사 드리고 싶습니다. 어머니께서는 현재 남가주 그린빌의 최적의 아름다운 시설에서 치료를 받고 계십니다. 다리의 상처는 계속해서 치료받고 있지만, 연세가 있으셔서 차도가 아주 느리게 나타나고 있습니다. 7월 말까지는 치료를 받으셔야 할 듯 합니다. 계속해서 기도해 주시기 바랍니다.
The River of Life School 생명의강 학교
The Lord has been moving among our students. They recently had a wonderful opportunity to perform at a Unification concert at the SaRang Community Church in Seoul. This is part of a series of Thursday night prayer meetings for North Korea featuring various different speakers. As of this writing, the concert is not yet on the web site but should be posted soon. (I spoke there on April 7th. You can access my talk--in Korean here.) Our students did very well and enjoyed the opportunity to hear the other performers, all of whom were outstanding. Then, the next day at school, they heard from evangelist Jaeson Ma who has been spending some time at Jesus Abbey. It was a great time of conviction and prayer. Many of the students were moved very deeply. We want to build on this as the young people draw closer to the Lord and seek Him in prayer.
주님께서 우리 학생들 가운데 움직이고 계십니다. 최근 서울 사랑의 교회에서 열린 통일 콘서트에서 공연할 아주 좋은 기회가 있었습니다. 통일 콘서트는 매주 목요일 사랑의 교회에서 다양한 강사들을 모시고 열리는 북한을 위한 기도회의 일환이었습니다. 아직 홈페이지 콘서트 실황이 올려지지 않았지만, 곧 게시될 것입니다. 저는 지난 4월 7일에 강의했고, 여기를 클릭하시면 한국어로 제 강의를 들으실 수 있습니다. 우리 학생들은 공연을 훌륭히 해냈고, 다른 분들이 뛰어난 공연을 즐겁게 감상했습니다. 그리고 다음날 학교에서 예수원에 머물고 있던 복음전도자 제이슨 마 목사님으로부터 말씀을 들었습니다. 놀라운 기도와 결단의 시간이었습니다. 많은 학생들이 깊이 감동을 받았습니다. 청소년들이 주께 더 가까이 나아가고 기도가운데 주님을 찾는 시간을 더욱 견고히 하고자 합니다.
The Fourth River Project 네번째강 계획
With the way that God has been moving among the students of The River of Life School and the things that He has been showing us about renewing our commitment to prayer, we are preparing for our summer labor schools with the theme of, "Teach me to pray, Oh Lord." The Lord has re-emphasized to us, again, how crucial prayer is for all that we do and for the preparation for the opening of North Korea. It is fundamental to the healing of this land and people. We need to lay ever more extensive foundations in prayer. We are looking to our two one-week schools in August for middle and high school students to be special times of drawing the young people deeper into prayer both so as to deepen intimacy with God and for healing and reconciliation for Korea--North and South. Please remember us in your prayers as we prepare for the labor schools.
하나님께서 생명의강 학교의 학생들 가운데 움직이시는 것과 우리에게 기도에 새롭게 헌신하길 원하신다는 것을 보며, 올 여름 노동학교는 “오 주여, 기도를 가르치소서”라는 주제로 준비하고 있습니다. 다시 한 번 주님께서는 우리가 하는 모든 일을 위해서 기도가 얼마나 중요한지, 북한 개방을 준비하는 데 있어서 기도가 얼마나 중요한 지 강조하셨습니다. 기도는 이 나라와 민족의 치유를 위해서 가장 근본적인 일입니다. 기도에 좀 더 넓은 기초를 세워야 할 때 입니다. 8월에 중, 고등학교 학생들을 대상으로 하는 두 주간의 노동학교 기간이 청소년들이 기도에 더 가까이 가는 특별한 시간이 되기를 기대하고 있습니다. 이 기간 청소년들이 하나님과 더 깊은 친밀감을 갖게 되고 남북한의 화해를 위해서 깊이 기도하게 될 것입니다. 노동학교를 위해서 기도해 주시기를 부탁드립니다.
The Three Seas 삼수령
We continue to raise funds to begin construction of the Three Seas Center that will be the new home for The River of Life School. From the beginning, the Lord impressed on me the need for the Christian Church to seek unity. This is the most important preparation of all for the opening of North Korea. Increasingly, I feel that God is waiting for us. Once the Church in Korea comes together in meaningful unity and cooperation then He will open the doors to the North. Recently, He showed me that this imperative for unity and the work to build the Center are intimately connected. He wants the Three Seas Center to stand as a symbol of Church unity. As the Korean Church comes together in practical cooperation to put up the funds needed to build the Center, it will serve as a testimony to the world that the churches of Korea are really together in this work and that there is a new spirit of cooperation at the most practical levels. We pray that the churches of Korea unite around this project, that they join together to build the Three Seas Center as a place to prepare for the opening of North Korea and the healing of the nation. As I felt the Lord speaking to me about this, I wrote a message to the leaders of the Korean Church. If you are interested in reading it, you may find it here in Korean and in English. Pray that God anoint this message as I continue to send it out to Church leaders.
생명의강 학교를 위한 새로운 캠퍼스가 될 삼수령 센터 건축을 위한 모금 운동은 계속 진행 중에 있습니다. 처음부터 주님은 교회가 일치돼야 한다고 제게 말씀하셨습니다. 교회의 일치는 북한 개방을 위한 가장 중요한 준비입니다. 주님께서 우리를 기다리고 계시다는 느낌이 점점 듭니다. 한국 교회가 일치와 협력을 이루면, 그 때 주님께서 북한을 향한 문을 여실 것입니다. 최근 주님께서는 교회 일치와 센터 건축이 긴밀히 관련돼 있음을 보여주셨습니다. 주님께서는 삼수령센터가 교회 일치의 상징으로 나타나기를 원하십니다. 한국 교회가 함께 센터 건축을 위한 자금을 모으는데 실제적으로 협력하면, 한국 교회가 이 일에 있어서 함께 하고 있고 새로운 협력의 영이 실제적으로 일하고 있음을 세상에 나타내는 증거가 될 것입니다. 우리는 한국 교회가 이 일을 중심으로 연합해서, 북한 개방을 준비하고 조국의 치유를 위해서 일하게 될 삼수령 센터를 함께 건축하도록 기도하고 있습니다. 주님께서 이에 대해 제게 말씀하셨다고 느껴서, 저는 한국 교회 지도자들에게 편지를 썼습니다. 이 글을 읽어보시기 원하면 여기를 클릭하시면, 한국어나 영어로 보실 수 있습니다. 제가 이 내용을 교회 지도자들에게 계속해서 보낼 때 하나님께서 이에 기름 부어 주시도록 기도해 주십시오.
