민수기 21:4-9
4 그들은 에돔 지방을 피해 가려고 호르산을 떠나 홍해바다 쪽으로 돌아갔다. 길을 가는 동안 백성들은 참지 못하고 They traveled from Mount Hor along the route to the Red Sea, to go around Edom. But the people grew impatient on the way;
5 하나님과 모세에게 대들었다. "어쩌자고 우리를 에집트에서 데려 내 왔습니까? 이 광야에서 죽일 작정입니까? 먹을 것도 없고 마실 물도 없습니다. 이 거친 음식은 이제 진저리가 납니다."
they spoke against God and against Moses, and said, "Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the desert? There is no bread! There is no water! And we detest this miserable food!"
6 그러자 야훼께서는 백성에게 불뱀을 보내셨다. 불뱀이 많은 이스라엘 백성을 물어 죽이자,
Then the LORD sent venomous snakes among them; they bit the people and many Israelites died.
7 백성들은 마침내 모세에게 와서 간청하였다. "우리가 야훼와 당신께 대든 것은 잘못이었습니다. 뱀이 물러가게 야훼께 기도해주십시오." 모세가 백성을 위하여 기도를 드리자,
The people came to Moses and said, "We sinned when we spoke against the LORD and against you. Pray that the LORD will take the snakes away from us." So Moses prayed for the people.
8 야훼께서 모세에게 대답하셨다. "너는 불뱀을 만들어 기둥에 달아놓고 뱀에게 물린 사람마다 그것을 쳐다보게 하여라. 그리하면 죽지 아니하리라." The LORD said to Moses, "Make a snake and put it up on a pole; anyone who is bitten can look at it and live."
9 모세는 구리로 뱀을 만들어 기둥에 달아 놓았다. 뱀에게 물렸어도 그 구리뱀을 쳐다본 사람은 죽지 않았다. So Moses made a bronze snake and put it up on a pole. Then when anyone was bitten by a snake and looked at the bronze snake, he lived.

시편 102:1-3, 16-23
1 [ 억눌려 지내는 사람이 절망하여 야훼께 호소하는 기도 ] 야훼여, 내 기도를 들어 주소서. 내 부르짖는 소리, 당신께 이르게 하소서. A prayer of an afflicted man. When he is faint and pours out his lament before the LORD. Hear my prayer, O LORD; let my cry for help come to you.
2 내가 곤경에 빠졌을 때, 당신의 얼굴을 나에게서 돌리지 마소서. 당신 이름을 부를 때, 귀를 기울이시고 빨리 대답하소서. Do not hide your face from me when I am in distress. Turn your ear to me; when I call, answer me quickly.
3 나의 세월은 연기처럼 사라지고 뼈마디는 숯불처럼 타버립니다.
For my days vanish like smoke; my bones burn like glowing embers.
16 야훼께서 시온을 다시 일으키실 때 영광 중에 나타나시고
For the LORD will rebuild Zion and appear in his glory.
17 헐벗은 자의 소리를 들어 주시며 애원하는 그 소리를 물리치지 않으시리니,
He will respond to the prayer of the destitute; he will not despise their plea.
18 새 백성이 하나님을 찬양하도록 오는 세대를 위하여 이것을 기록해 두어라.
Let this be written for a future generation, that a people not yet created may praise the LORD:
19 야훼께서 저 높은 성소에서 굽어 보셨다. 하늘에서 이 땅을 살펴보셨다.
"The LORD looked down from his sanctuary on high, from heaven he viewed the earth,
20 갇힌 자들의 신음소리 들으시고 죽음에 불린 자들을 놓아 주셨다.
to hear the groans of the prisoners and release those condemned to death."
21 야훼의 명성 시온에 울려 퍼지고 그 찬미소리 예루살렘에 자자한 가운데
So the name of the LORD will be declared in Zion and his praise in Jerusalem
22 임금마다 그 백성을 거느리고서 야훼를 섬기러 모여들리라.
when the peoples and the kingdoms assemble to worship the LORD.
23 내 기력 도중에서 다하였으니 나의 세월, 이제는 거두시는가?
In the course of my life he broke my strength; he cut short my days.

요한복음 8:21-30
21 예수께서 다시 그들에게 말씀하셨다. "나는 간다. 그러면 너희는 나를 찾다가 자기 죄에서 헤어나지 못하고 죽을 터이니 내가 가는 곳에는 오지 못할 것이다." Once more Jesus said to them, "I am going away, and you will look for me, and you will die in your sin. Where I go, you cannot come."
22 이 말씀을 듣고 유다인들은 "이 사람이 자기가 가는 곳에 우리는 가지 못할 것이라고 하니 자살이라도 하겠다는 말인가?" 하고 중얼거렸다.
This made the Jews ask, "Will he kill himself? Is that why he says, 'Where I go, you cannot come'?"
23 예수께서 이렇게 말씀하셨다. "너희는 아래에서 왔지만 나는 위에서 왔다. 너희는 이 세상에 속해 있지만 나는 이 세상에 속해있지 않다. But he continued, "You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.
24 그래서 나는 너희가 자기 죄에서 헤어나지 못한 채 죽으리라고 한 것이다. 만일 너희가 내가 그이라는 것을 믿지 않으면 그와 같이 죄에서 헤어나지 못한 채 죽고 말 것이다.  
"I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am the one I claim to be, you will indeed die in your sins."
25 "그러면 당신은 누구요?" 하고 그들이 묻자 예수께서 이렇게 대답하셨다. "처음부터 내가 누구라는 것을 말하지 않았느냐?
"Who are you?" they asked. "Just what I have been claiming all along," Jesus replied.
26 나는 너희에 대해서 할 말도 많고 판단할 것도 많지만 나를 보내신 분은 참되시기에 나도 그분에게서 들은 것을 그대로 이 세상에 말할 뿐이다." "I have much to say in judgment of you. But he who sent me is reliable, and what I have heard from him I tell the world."
27 그러나 그들은 예수께서 아버지를 가리켜 말씀하신 줄을 깨닫지 못하였다.
They did not understand that he was telling them about his Father.
28 그래서 예수께서는 "너희가 사람의 아들을 높이 들어 올린 뒤에야 내가 누구라는 것을 알게 될 것이다. 또 내가 아무것도 내 마음대로 하지 않고 아버지께서 가르쳐 주신 것만 말하고 있다는 것도 알게 될 것이다.
So Jesus said, "When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am the one I claim to be and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me.
29 나를 보내신 분은 나와 함께 계시고 나를 혼자 버려 두시지는 않는다. 나는 언제나 아버지께서 기뻐하시는 일을 하기 때문이다"하고 말씀하셨다.
The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what pleases him."
30 이 말씀을 듣고 많은 사람들이 예수를 믿게 되었다.
Even as he spoke, many put their faith in him.
