히브리서 11:32-40
32 내가 무슨 말을 더 하겠습니까? 기드온, 바락, 삼손, 옙타, 다윗, 사무엘, 그리고 예언자들의 이야기를 일일이 다 하자면 시간이 모자랄 것입니다. And what more shall I say? I do not have time to tell about Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel and the prophets,
33 그들은 믿음을 가지고 여러 나라를 정복하였고 정의를 실천하였고 약속해 주신 것을 받았고 사자의 입을 막았으며 who through faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, and gained what was promised; who shut the mouths of lions,
34 맹렬한 불을 껐고 칼날을 피하였고 약했지만 강해졌고 전쟁에서 용맹을 떨쳤고 외국 군대를 물리쳤습니다. quenched the fury of the flames, and escaped the edge of the sword; whose weakness was turned to strength; and who became powerful in battle and routed foreign armies.
35 죽었다가 다시 살아나서 돌아오는 식구들을 만난 여자들도 있습니다. 그러나 어떤 이들은 죽었다가 다시 살아나서 더 나은 생명을 누리려고 석방도 거부하고 고문을 달게 받았습니다.
Women received back their dead, raised to life again. Others were tortured and refused to be released, so that they might gain a better resurrection.
36 또 어떤 이들은 조롱을 받고 채찍으로 얻어맞고 심지어는 결박을 당하여 감옥에 갇히기까지 하였습니다.  Some faced jeers and flogging, while still others were chained and put in prison.
37 또 돌에 맞아 죽고 톱질을 당하고 칼에 맞아 죽기도 했습니다. 그리고 양과 염소의 가죽을 몸에 두르고 돌아 다녔으며 가난과 고난과 학대를 겪기도 했습니다.
They were stoned; they were sawed in two; they were put to death by the sword. They went about in sheepskins and goatskins, destitute, persecuted and mistreated--
38 이런 사람들에게는 이 세상이 살 만한 곳이 되지 못했습니다. 그래서 그들은 광야와 산과 동굴과 땅굴로 헤매며 다녔습니다. the world was not worthy of them. They wandered in deserts and mountains, and in caves and holes in the ground.
39 이 사람들은 모두 믿음이 있었기 때문에 하나님의 인정을 받았습니다. 그러나 약속된 것을 받지는 못했습니다.
These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised.
40 하나님께서 우리를 위해서 더 좋은 것을 마련해 두셨기 때문에 그들은 우리를 제쳐놓고는 결코 완성에 이르지는 못하게 되어 있었던 것입니다. God had planned something better for us so that only together with us would they be made perfect.

시편 31:19-24
19 당신의 주시는 복은 어찌 이리 크시옵니까? 당신을 경외하는 자들을 위하여 간직하신 그 복을, 당신께 피신한 사람에게 사람들보는 앞에서 베푸십니다.
How great is your goodness, which you have stored up for those who fear you, which you bestow in the sight of men on those who take refuge in you.
20 작당하여 달려드는 자들의 손으로부터 당신 앞 은밀한 곳에서 그들을 보호하시고
In the shelter of your presence you hide them from the intrigues of men; in your dwelling you keep them safe from accusing tongues.
21 그들을 당신 장막 속에 숨겨 말 많은 자들에게서 보살피십니다.
Praise be to the LORD, for he showed his wonderful love to me when I was in a besieged city.
22 성채가 포위되고 공격받는 중에도 한결같은 사랑의 기적 내리셨으니, 야훼여, 찬미 받으소서. 당신께서는 정녕 들어 주셨사옵니다. In my alarm I said, "I am cut off from your sight!" Yet you heard my cry for mercy when I called to you for help.
23 나 환난 중에서 "주님 눈밖에 났구나" 생각하였으나 당신께 부르짖었을 때 내 기도 소리를 들어 주셨사옵니다. Love the LORD, all his saints! The LORD preserves the faithful, but the proud he pays back in full.
24 믿음 깊은 자들아, 야훼를 사랑하여라. 그를 믿는 자들은 지켜 주시지만 거만한 행실은 가차없이 벌하신다. 야훼께 바라는 자 모두 힘을 내어라, 용기를 내어라.
Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the LORD.

마르코 5:1-20
1 그들은 호수 건너편 게라사 지방에 이르렀다.
They went across the lake to the region of the Gerasenes.
2 예수께서 배에서 내리셨을 때에 더러운 악령 들린 사람 하나가 무덤에서 나오다가 예수를 만나게 되었다.
When Jesus got out of the boat, a man with an evil spirit came from the tombs to meet him.
3 그는 무덤에서 살았는데 이제는 아무도 그를 매어 둘 수가 없었다. 쇠사슬도 소용이 없었다.
This man lived in the tombs, and no one could bind him any more, not even with a chain.
4 여러 번 쇠고랑을 채우고 쇠사슬로 묶어 두었지만 그는 번번이 쇠사슬을 끊고 쇠고랑도 부수어 버려 아무도 그를 휘어잡지 못하였다. For he had often been chained hand and foot, but he tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet. No one was strong enough to subdue him.
5 그리고 그는 밤이나 낮이나 항상 묘지와 산을 돌아다니면서 소리를 지르고 돌로 제 몸을 짓찧곤 하였다.
Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones.
6 그는 멀찍이서 예수를 보자 곧 달려 가 그 앞에 엎드려
When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees in front of him.
7 "지극히 높으신 하나님의 아들 예수님, 왜 저를 간섭하십니까? 제발 저를 괴롭히지 마십시오" 하고 큰 소리로 외쳤다. He shouted at the top of his voice, "What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? Swear to God that you won't torture me!"
8 그것은 예수께서 악령을 보시기만 하면 "더러운 악령아, 그 사람에게서 나오너라" 하고 명령하시기 때문이었다.
For Jesus had said to him, "Come out of this man, you evil spirit!"
9 예수께서 "네 이름이 무엇이냐?" 하고 물으시자 그는 "군대하고 합니다. 수효가 많아서 그렇습니다" 하고 대답하였다. Then Jesus asked him, "What is your name?" "My name is Legion," he replied, "for we are many."
10 그리고 자기들을 그 지방에서 쫓아내지 말아 달라고 애걸하였다.
And he begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of the area.
11 마침 그 곳 산기슭에는 놓아기르는 돼지 떼가 우글거리고 있었는데
A large herd of pigs was feeding on the nearby hillside.
12 악령들은 예수께 "저희를 저 돼지들에게 보내어 그 속에 들어가게 해 주십시오" 하고 간청하였다.
The demons begged Jesus, "Send us among the pigs; allow us to go into them."
13 예수께서 허락하시자 더러운 악령들은 그 사람에게서 나와 돼지들 속으로 들어갔다. 그러자 거의 이천 마리나 되는 돼지 떼가 바다를 향하여 비탈을 내리달려 물 속에 빠져 죽고 말았다.
He gave them permission, and the evil spirits came out and went into the pigs. The herd, about two thousand in number, rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned.
14 돼지 치던 사람들은 읍내와 촌락으로 달려가서 이 일을 알렸다. 동네 사람들은 무슨 일이 일어났는지 보러 나왔다가 Those tending the pigs ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened.
15 예수께서 계신 곳에 이르러 군대라는 마귀가 들렸던 사람이 옷을 바로 입고 멀쩡한 정신으로 앉아 있는 것을 보고는 그만 겁이 났다.
When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons, sitting there, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.
16 이 일을 지켜 본 사람들이 마귀 들렸던 사람이 어떻게 해서 나았으며 돼지 떼가 어떻게 되었는가를 동네 사람들에게 동네 사람들에게 들려주자 Those who had seen it told the people what had happened to the demon-possessed man--and told about the pigs as well.
17 그들은 예수께 그 지방을 떠나 달라고 간청하였다.
Then the people began to plead with Jesus to leave their region.
18 예수께서 배에 오르실 때에 마귀 들렸던 사람이 예수를 따라 다니게 해 달라고 애원하였지만
As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged to go with him.
19 예수께서는 허락하지 않으시고 "주께서 자비를 베풀어 너에게 얼마나 큰 일을 해 주셨는지 집에 가서 가족에게 알려라" 하고 이르셨다.
Jesus did not let him, but said, "Go home to your family and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you."
20 그는 물러가서 예수께서 자기에게 해 주신 일을 데카폴리스 지방에 두루 알렸다. 이 말을 듣는 사람마다 모두 놀랐다.
So the man went away and began to tell in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him. And all the people were amazed.

+ 이런 사람들에게는 이 세상이 살 만한 곳이 되지 못했습니다. 그래서 그들은 광야와 산과 동굴과 땅굴로 헤매며 다녔습니다. 개역성경에는 '이런 사람은 세상이 감당치 못하도다'라고 말씀하고 있습니다. 그들은 모두 믿음이 있었기 때문에 하나님의 인정을 받았다고 말씀하고 있습니다. 세상이 감당하지 못할 믿음의 사람이 됩시다. 그러기 위해서 우리는 시편기자의 고백이 우리의 고백이 되어야겠습니다.
"믿음 깊은 자들아, 야훼를 사랑하여라. 그를 믿는 자들은 지켜 주시지만 거만한 행실은 가차없이 벌하신다. 야훼께 바라는 자 모두 힘을 내어라, 용기를 내어라. Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the LORD."(시 31:24)
