예레미야 31:15-17
15 나 야훼가 말한다. 라마에서 통곡소리가 들린다. 애절한 울음소리가 들린다. 라헬이 자식을 잃고 울고 있구나. 그 눈앞에 아이들이 없어 위로하는 말이 하나도 귀에 들어가지 않는구나. This is what the LORD says: "A voice is heard in Ramah, mourning and great weeping, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because her children are no more."
16 이 야훼의 말을 들어라. 울음을 그치고 눈물을 거두어라. 애태운 보람이 있어 자식들이 적국에서 돌아오리라. 이는 내 말이라, 어김이 없다.
This is what the LORD says: "Restrain your voice from weeping and your eyes from tears, for your work will be rewarded," declares the LORD. "They will return from the land of the enemy.
17 밝은 앞날이 너를 기다리고 있다. 내가 분명히 말한다. 너의 자식들이 고향으로 돌아오리라.
So there is hope for your future," declares the LORD. "Your children will return to their own land.

시편 124
1 이스라엘이 하는 말, "야훼께서 우리 편이 아니셨더면,
A song of ascents. Of David. If the LORD had not been on our side--let Israel say--
2 원수들이 우리를 치러 일어났을 때 야훼께서 우리 편이 아니셨더면
if the LORD had not been on our side when men attacked us,
3 그들은 달려들어 살기 등등, 산 채로 우리를 집어 삼켰으리라.
when their anger flared against us, they would have swallowed us alive;
4 거센 등살에 우리는 휩쓸리고 마침내 물에 빠져 죽고 말았으리라.
the flood would have engulfed us, the torrent would have swept over us,
5 거품 뿜는 물결에 빠져 죽고 말았으리라."
the raging waters would have swept us away.
6 야훼를 찬미하여라. 우리를 원수들에게 먹히지 않게 하셨다.
Praise be to the LORD, who has not let us be torn by their teeth.
7 새 잡는 그물에서 참새를 구하듯이 우리의 목숨을 건져내셨다.  
We have escaped like a bird out of the fowler's snare; the snare has been broken, and we have escaped.
8 그물은 찢어지고 우리는 살아났다. 하늘과 땅을 만드신 분, 야훼의 이름밖에는 우리의 구원이 없구나. Our help is in the name of the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth.

고린도전서 1:26-29
26 형제 여러분, 여러분이 하나님의 부르심을 받았을 때의 일을 생각해 보십시오. 세속적인 견지에서 볼때에 여러분 중에 지혜로운 사람, 유력한 사람, 또는 가문이 좋은 사람이 과연 몇이나 있었습니까?
Brothers, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth.
27 그런데 하나님께서는 지혜 있다는 자들을 부끄럽게 하시려고 이 세상의 어리석은 사람들을 택하셨으며, 강하다는 자들을 부끄럽게 하시려고 이 세상의 약한 사람들을 택하셨습니다.
But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.
28 또 유력한 자를 무력하게 하시려고 세상에서 보잘 것 없는 사람들과 멸시받는 사람들, 곧 아무것도 아닌 사람들을 택하셨습니다.
He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things--and the things that are not--to nullify the things that are,
29 그러니 인간으로서는 아무도 하나님 앞에서 자랑 할 수 없다는 말입니다.
so that no one may boast before him.

마태복음 2:13-18
13 박사들이 물러 간 뒤에 주의 천사가 요셉의 꿈에 나타나서 "헤로데가 아기를 찾아 죽이려 하니 어서 일어나 아기와 아기 어머니를 데리고 에집트로 피신하여 내가 알려 줄 때까지 거기에 있어라" 하고 일러 주었다.
When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. "Get up," he said, "take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him."
14 요셉은 일어나 그 밤으로 아기와 아기 어머니를 데리고 에집트로 가서
So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt,
15 헤로데가 죽을 때까지 거기에서 살았다. 이리하여 주께서 예언자를 시켜 "내가 내 아들을 에집트에서 불러 내었다" 고 하신 말씀이 이루어졌다.
where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: "Out of Egypt I called my son."
16 헤로데는 박사들에게 속은 것을 알고 몹시 노하였다. 그래서 사람을 보내어 박사들에게 알아 본 때를 대중하여 베들레헴과 그 일대에 사는 두 살 이하의 사내아이를 모조리 죽여 버렸다.
When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi.
17 이리하여 예언자 예레미야를 시켜,
Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled:
18 "라마에서 들려 오는 소리, 울부짖고 애통하는 소리, 자식 잃고 우는 라헬, 위로마저 마다는 구나!" 하신 말씀이 이루어졌다.
"A voice is heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more."

'야훼께서 우리편이 아니셨다면, 야훼께서 우리 편이 아니셨다면....' 어찌 이 죄 많은 인간을 구원할 수 있었겠습니까? 완악한 헤로데의 모습을 보며, 성탄의 기쁨 속에 함께 하는 애절한 통곡소리를 듣습니다. 오늘은 죄 없는 어린이들의 순교를 기념하는 날입니다. 이미 예수그리스도의 탄생은 죽음과 함께 하는 삶이었습니다. 십자가의 죽음이 없는 영원한 생명은 애초부터 계획 될 수가 없었습니다. 오늘 하루도 그리스도안에서 연약하고 어리석은 나의 자아가 죽고 오직 '야훼의 이름밖에는 우리의 구원이 없다'는 것을 체험하고 증거 하는 축복된 하루가 되기를 기도합니다.
