히브리서 11:1-2, 8-19
1 믿음은 우리가 바라는 것들을 보증해 주고 볼 수 없는 것들을 확증해 줍니다.
Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.
2 옛 사람들도 이 믿음으로 하나님의 인정을 받았던 것입니다.
This is what the ancients were commended for.
8 아브라함도 믿음이 있었기 때문에 하나님께서 그를 불러 장차 그의 몫으로 물려주실 땅을 향하여 떠나라고 하실 때 그대로 순종했습니다. 사실 그는 자기가 가는 곳이 어떤 곳인지도 모르고 떠났던 것입니다. By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going.
9 그는 믿음이 있었기 때문에 약속의 땅에서도 같은 약속을 물려받은 이사악과 야곱과 함께 천막을 치고 나그네나 다름없는 생활을 하며 머물러 살았습니다.
By faith he made his home in the promised land like a stranger in a foreign country; he lived in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise.
10 그러면서 그는 하나님께서 설계자가 되시고 건축가가 되셔서 튼튼한 기초 위에 세워 주실 도시를 바라며 살았던 것입니다.
For he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God.
11 그의 아내 사라도 이제 나이가 많은 여자인데다가 원래 아이를 가질 수 없는 사람이었지만 믿음이 있었기 때문에 아이를 가질 수 있는 능력을 받았습니다. 사라는 약속해 주신 분을 진실한 분으로 믿었던 것입니다.
By faith Abraham, even though he was past age--and Sarah herself was barren--was enabled to become a father because he considered him faithful who had made the promise.
12 이렇게 해서 죽은 사람이나 다름없는 늙은 아브라함 한 사람에게서 난 자손이 하늘이 별과 같이 많아지고 바닷가의 모래와 같이 셀 수 없게 되었습니다.  
And so from this one man, and he as good as dead, came descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as countless as the sand on the seashore.
13 그들은 모두 믿음으로 살다가 죽었습니다. 약속 받은 것을 얻지는 못했으나 그것을 멀리서 바라보고 기뻐했으며 이 지상에서는 자기들이 타향사람이며 나그네에 불과하다는 것을 인정했습니다.
All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance. And they admitted that they were aliens and strangers on earth.
14 그들이 이렇게 생각한 것은 그들이 찾고 있던 고향이 따로 있었다는 것을 분명히 드러내는 것입니다. People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own.
15 만일 그들이 떠나 온 곳을 고향으로 생각했었다면 그리로 돌아 갈 기회도 있었을 것입니다.
If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return.
16 그러나 실지로 그들이 갈망한 곳은 하늘에 있는 더 나은 고향이었습니다. 그래서 하나님께서는 그들이 당신을 자기들의 하나님이라고 부르는 것을 수치로 여기시지 않고 오히려 그들을 위해서 한 도시를 마련해 주셨습니다.
Instead, they were longing for a better country--a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.
17 아브라함은 믿음이 있었기 때문에 하나님께서 시험하시려고 이사악을 바치라고 명령하셨을 때 기꺼이 바쳤습니다. 이사악은 외아들이었고 그를 두고 하나님께서 약속까지 해 주신 아들이었지만 그를 기꺼이 바치려고 했던 것입니다. By faith Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice. He who had received the promises was about to sacrifice his one and only son,
18 하나님께서는 "이사악에게서 너의 후손이 퍼져 나가리라" 고 약속하셨던 것입니다.
even though God had said to him, "It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned."
19 아브라함은 하나님께서 죽었던 사람들까지 살리실 수 있다고 믿고있었습니다. 그러므로 아브라함에게는 이를테면 죽었던 이사악을 되찾은 셈이 되었습니다. Abraham reasoned that God could raise the dead, and figuratively speaking, he did receive Isaac back from death.

즈가리아의 송가(루가복음 1:68-79)
이스라엘의 주 하느님을 찬미하여라 그 백성을 돌아보시어 구원하시고 우리를 위하여 주님의 종 다윗 가문에 전능하신 구세주를 세우셨습니다. 이는 하느님께서 예로부터 예언자들을 통하여 말씀하신 것이며 우리를 원수로부터 구하시고 그 손아귀에서 벗어나게 하려 하심입니다. 주께서 우리 조상들에게 자비를 베푸시어 그 거룩한 언약을 기억하시고 우리 조상 아브라함에게 맹세하신대로 우리를 원수의 손에서 구해내셨습니다. 두려움 없이 주님을 섬기며 한평생을 거룩하고 올바르게 살게 하셨습니다. 아가야 너는 지극히 높으신 하느님의 예언자 되리니 주님보다 앞서와서 그의 길을 닦으며 주님의 백성에게 그 구원을 알게 하여 주님의 용서하심을 얻게 하여라. 이는 하느님의 인자하신 덕분이니 새벽빛이 위로부터 우리에게 비추시어 어둠과 죽음의 그늘 속에 사는 사람들에게 빛을 주시고 평화의 길로 이끌어 주시리라.  영광이 성부와 성자와 성령께 처음과 같이 지금도 그리고 영원히 아멘.
    
마르코복음 4:35-41
35 그 날 저녁이 되자 예수께서 제자들에게 "호수 저편으로 건너가자" 고 말씀하셨다.
That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, "Let us go over to the other side."
36 그래서 그들이 군중을 남겨 둔 채 예수께서 타고 계신 배를 저어가자 다른 배들도 함께 따라 갔다.  Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him.
37 그런데 마침 거센 바람이 일더니 무결이 배 안으로 들이쳐서 물이 배에 거의 가득 차게 되었다.
A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped.
38 그런데도 예수께서는 뱃 고물을 베개삼아 주무시고 계셨다. 제자들이 예수를 깨우며 "선생님, 저희가 죽게 되었는데도 돌보시지 않습니까?" 하고 부르짖었다. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, "Teacher, don't you care if we drown?"
39 예수께서 일어나 바람을 꾸짖으시며 바다를 향하여 "고요하고 잠잠해져라!" 하고 호령하시자 바람은 그치고 바다는 아주 잔잔해졌다. He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, "Quiet! Be still!" Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.
40 그렇게 하시고 나서 예수께서는 그들에게 "왜 그렇게들 겁이 많으냐? 아직도 믿음이 없느냐?" 하고 책망하셨다.
He said to his disciples, "Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?"
41 그들은 두려움에 사로잡혀 "도대체 이분이 누구인데 바람과 바다까지 복종할까?" 하며 서로 수군거렸다.
They were terrified and asked each other, "Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!"
