The Situation in the North 북한의 상황

There are both some hopeful things coming out of the North and the ongoing difficulties...

On a positive note, it seems that China is seeking to do more in the way of investment in North Korea which will help the economic situation some, Here is an article about development in the Hyesan area. We are also beginning to see some hopeful signs that Kim Jong Un may really be interested in opening up to other foreign investment and creating a more open business environment. &n bsp;If he does follow through on this, it could mean not only a better life for the people but also gradual lessening of repression and restriction as happened in China (although China still has a long way to go.)

북한 소식은 희망적인 내용도 있지만, 계속되는 어려움이 있습니다. 긍정적인 소식은 중국이 북한의 경제적인 상황을 타계하도록 투자할 방법을 찾고 있다는 것입니다. 혜산 개발에 대한 소식은 여기(article)를 클릭하시면 보실 수 있습니다. 또한 김정은이 사업환경을 좀 더 개방하고 외국 투자자에게 문호를 여는데 실제적으로 관심이 있다는 희망적인 소식도 있습니다. 이 소식대로 된다면 주민들의 삶이 개선될 뿐 아니라 중국에서처럼(중국도 여전히 갈 길이 멀지만) 억압과 규제가 점차 줄어들 수 있다는 뜻도 됩니다.



On the negative side: The country has beefed up their identity card system to make it easier to control people, especially those who have been involved with activities that the government frowns on. Four North Koreans returned from China were recently executed and a number more put into prison camps.

부정적인 소식은 북한이 주민증 제도를 강화해서 주민통제를 더 쉽게 하려 하고 있습니다. 특히 정부가 꺼리는 활동에 관여하는 사람들을 통제하려 합니다. 중국에서 송환된 네 명의 탈북자들이 최근 처형되었고 많은 사람들이 포로수용소에 억류되었습니다.



We also have the increasingly serious drought situation in the North, especially in the main bread basket area of Hwanghae Do where farmers have just about given up on this summer's crops and beggars have been dying of starvation. The drought has even affected the capital where many residents are having difficulty getting water.

가뭄은 더 심각해지고 있는데, 특히 북한의 곡창인 황해도 지역의 농부들은 여름 수확을 포기한 상황이어서 거지들이 기아로 죽어가고 있습니다. 가뭄은 많은 주민이 거주하는 수도에도 영향을 줘서 물 부족 현상이 심각합니다.



It has not been easy for people in China and elsewhere seeking to help those leaving NK in search of food or a better life. Four South Korean activists have been detained in China for a few months now although there are hopeful signs that they may be released. An activist has also recently been arrested in Vietnam as well.

식량과 더 나은 삶을 찿아 북한을 떠나 중국 및 해외로 간 사람들의 사정도 쉽지 않습니다. 네 명의 한국인 활동가들이 석방의 전조가 보이고 있긴 하지만 몇 달째 중국에 구류중입니다. 최근 베트남에서도 한 명의 활동가가 체포되었습니다.

The River of Life School 생명의강 학교

Last month, I mentioned the fund-raising bazaar coming up. We delayed it to the first week of July so as to get better publicity. Please keep it in your prayers.

지난 달 후원마련을 위한 바자회가 열린다고 했는데 좀 더 많은 홍보를 위해서 7월 첫 주로 연기됐습니다. 이를 위해 기도해 주십시오.  



The semester is drawing to a close and everyone is looking forward to summer vacation! We pray that it will be a restful time for our students and teachers as well as beneficial in other ways. We are truly thankful to God for all that He has done in the face of serious challenges that we experienced as the new school year began in March and Principal Liz had to go the States to take care of Mother Jane Torrey during her final month with us.

1학기가 끝나가고 모두가 여름방학을 기다리고 있습니다! 학생과 교사들 모두에게 쉼이 되는 동시에 유익한 시간이 되길 기도하고 있습니다. 하나님께 진실로 감사드리는 것은 우리가 직면한 여러 어려움들 모두 이겨내도록 하나님께 일하셨습니다. 학기가 시작하면서 3월에 리즈 교장 선생님은 어머니 제인 토레이 여사를 간호하기 위해 미국에 가야만 했습니다.



The first week of vacation for our students will be spent at the Three Seas Ranch for our regular summer labor school. There is a lot of excitement about this.  Everyone always has a good time.  There is also the element of adventure in sleeping in tents and never being sure what the weather is going to do.  We are especially excited about the number of people who will be participating who are from North Korea or who work there now in different capacities.  We expect to get a lot of first hand knowledge about the North as well as hear from some precious members of the "generation of the fathers."

학생들은 여름방학 첫 주에 삼수령목장에서 매년 열리는 노동학교에 참석합니다. 흥분과 기대가 많습니다. 모두가 언제나 좋은 시간을 경험합니다. 천막에서 잠을 자는 모험도 있고 날씨는 예측불허입니다. 많은 사람들을 만나는 것에 대한 기대가 있습니다. 특히 탈북자들과 여러 분야에서 현재 일하고 있는 분들도 참석할 것입니다. 그분들을 통해 북한에 대한 생생한 정보를 얻을 뿐 아니라 “아버지 세대”에 속한 소중한 어른들에게도 많은 것을 배우게 될 것입니다.



We need more students for second semester.  Pray for more enrollment.  Several students have withdrawn this first semester for family reasons and family travel overseas.  We would like to see their number replaced as well as some new students to come.

2학기에 좀 많은 학생이 필요합니다. 등록을 위해 기도해 주십시오. 몇몇 학생이 가정문제나 해외 이동으로 인해 1학기중에 학교를 그만두었습니다. 그 자리를 보충할 학생들과 몇 명의 신입생을 더 받을 수 있기를 바랍니다.



The Three Seas 삼수령

Brother John Choi and his family have gone to England for six months sabbatical at the Bruderhof Community in Darvell.  We have just finished renovating the house that they lived in, the oldest structure at the Ranch.  It seems like a brand new home!  We also expect the second new family house to be completed within weeks.  This is the second of three that we received permission for from the Forestry Department.  God gave us a surprise gift that enabled us to do the renovations and build this house.  We do not know when we will be able to build the third one.  It all depends on funds but we know it will be when God decides that it is needed.

최 요한 형제 가정이 영국 다벨의 브루더호프 공동체로 6개월간의 안식을 위해 떠났습니다. 그 후 이 가정이 살던 목장에서 가장 오래된 집을 수리하기 시작해서 이제 마무리 단계에 있습니다. 새 집처럼 단장될 것입니다. 또한 몇 주 내로 산림청에서 허가한 세 채의 관리사 중 두 번째 관리사가 완공될 예정입니다. 하나님께서 우리에게 새로운 집과 함께 헌 집을 수리할 수 있는 놀라운 선물을 주셨습니다. 세 번째 관리사는 언제 짓게 될 지 알 수 없습니다. 자금에 따라 달라지겠지만, 하나님께서 필요하다고 결정하시면 그 때 짓게 될 것입니다.



We have another family joining us this month.  They have been waiting patiently for the renovations to be completed.  Brother Joseph Paik, his wife Sarah and their children will be living in Hosanna house.  Here at Jesus Abbey, we do not use titles like "pastor" or "father", everyone is either "brother" or "sister"; however, we have started to joke that our cattle receive the best spiritual care--you need to go to seminary in order to feed our cows.  Brother John Choi, Brother Joseph and Brother Zechariah Chun, who came with his family to join us recently, are all ordained pastors!  Brother Annan, who is in charge of the cattle, has also been to seminary but did not think it was necessary to get ordained.  He is able to give the cattle as much spiritual guidance as any of the other brothers.

새로운 가정이 합류합니다. 집이 보수되기만을 기다리고 있었습니다. 백 요셉, 곽 사라부부와 세 명의 자녀가 보수한 호산나에 살게 됩니다. 이곳 예수원에서는 “목사”나 “신부”와 같은 직함을 사용하지 않고 모두 “형제”, “자매”라고 호칭합니다. 그런데 여기서 재미있는 농담을 하나 하면, 우리 소들이 영적인 돌봄을 받게 되었습니다. 우리 소를 키우기 위해서는 신학교에 가야 할 것 같습니다. 최 요한 형제, 백 요셉 형제, 천 사가랴 형제는 모두 목사입니다! 목장 책임을 맡고 있는 조 아난 형제도 필요가 없다고 생각해서 안수는 받지 않았지만 신학교를 다녔습니다. 그래서 다른 형제들처럼 소들에게 영적인 가르침을 줄 수 있습니다.



Things are very busy for us this month as we get ready for our labor school.  Our volunteer staffs arrive on July 19th and the first school starts on the 23rd.  The whole program runs for three weeks through August 10th.  As we look towards the 10th anniversary of Father Archer Torrey's "entrance into Heaven" (so chun) as the Koreans put it, and the recent home-going of Mother Jane Torrey, we are contemplating how one generation passes on to the next the knowledge of our great and mighty God.  Our theme for the labor schools this year is Psalm 145:4 "One generation shall praise thy works to another, and shall declare thy mighty acts."

이번 달은 노동학교가 시작 돼서 매우 바쁩니다. 7월 19일에는 자원봉사 일꾼들이 도착해서 23일에 학교가 시작됩니다. 전체 일정은 8월 10일까지 3주에 걸쳐 진행됩니다. 올해는 대 천덕 신부님이 소천하신 지 10주년이 되고 최근 어머니 현 재인 사모도 돌아가셔서, 어떻게 한 세대가 다음 세대에게 위대하고 능하신 하나님의 지식을 전하는 지에 대해 묵상해 보려 합니다. 올 해 노동학교 주제는 시편 145:4 “대대로 주의 행사를 크게 칭송하며 주의 능한 일을 선포하리로다”입니다.



We are very close to getting final approval from the Forestry Department to build the first phase of the Three Seas Training Center, "Community Village", that will be the new home for The River of Life School.  Everything was held up last fall when an early heavy snow kept us from completing the final survey.  We had to wait until the snow was finally gone in April to finish the survey and all the other things that needed to be done.  We have submitted everything to them for their approval which we expect in a week or two.  Then we will need to apply to the City of Taebaek Construction Department for the actual construction permit. We do not anticipate any problems there as they are as anxious as we are for the project to move forward.  The only issue at that point will be the funds to actually hire a contractor and begin the work.  We have all we need to get that far but not beyond it.  However, God has been most faithful up to now so we are confident that He will provide through His Church at the right time.  As I have written in the past, God has impressed on me strongly that this center is to be a living example of cooperation among the people of God of all denominations.  Many churches have already contributed to support this project but there are many, many more that need to.  Pray that the Korean Church will come together in unity to provide the funds and expertise needed to build the Three Seas Center.  Thank you for joining us in this prayer.

삼수령 센터의 첫번째 공사 단계로 생명의강 학교의 캠퍼스가 될 “공동체 마을”건축을 위한 마지막 승인을 산림청으로부터 곧 받게 될 것 같습니다. 작년 겨울 폭설로 인해 마지막 측량작업이 전면 중단되었다가 이제야 다 마무리되었습니다. 4월까지 눈이 녹기를 기다려서 필요한 모든 작업을 마쳤습니다. 산림청에서 요구하는 모든 서류를 1, 2주내로 제출하면, 실제 건축 승인을 위해서 태백시 건축과에 신청서를 내야 합니다. 건축계획이 진전되기를 간절히 바라기 때문에 문제는 없으리라고 봅니다. 이제 중요한 것은 계약자를 선정하고 일을 시작하기 위해서 필요한 자금입니다. 승인을 위해 필요한 모든 자금은 있지만 그 이상은 아닙니다. 하지만, 하나님께서 지금까지 가장 신실하게 인도해 오셨기에 그분의 때에 그의 교회를 통해 우리에게 필요한 돈을 주시리라고 믿습니다. 전에도 제가 썼듯이, 하나님께서는 삼수령 센터가 모든 교파의 하나님의 사람들 간에 협력을 보여주는 생생한 본보기가 되리라고 네게 강하게 말씀하셨습니다. 만은 교회가 이미 돕고 있지만, 더 많은 도움이 필요합니다. 한국 교회가 함께 삼수령센터를 짓기 위해 필요한 자금을 내도록 기도해 주십시오. 함께 기도해 주셔서 감사드립니다.
