* The Situation in the North 북한의 상황

As most everyone is aware, Kim Jong Il died on December 17th, reportedly of a heart attack while traveling on a train to give on-the-spot guidance.  North Korea is wasting no time adding to his myth, reporting miraculous events surrounding his death.  His third son, Kim Jong Un seems to be moving into position as North Korea's new supreme ruler without much difficulty although the test will be in how things work out over the next six months or so.  Already, though, it appears that the new ruler is showing himself to be as ruthless as his father.  Again, no time is being wasted in building up a new cult for the son who supposedly thrashed 70 US soldiers who attempted to invade North Korea last year...

알고계시듯이 지난 12월 17일 김정일이 기차여행중 심장마비를 일으켰습니다. 북한은 그의 죽음을 둘러싼 기적들을 보도하면서 김정일의 신화를 덧붙이는데 시간을 낭비하지 않았습니다. 셋째 아들 김정은은 큰 어려움 없이 북한의 새로운 최고 지배자의 자리에 앉는 것 같습니다. 물론 김정은의 정권이 무리 없이 가는 지는 앞으로 6개월 이상 지켜봐야 하겠습니다. 벌써부터 김정은은 그의 부친만큼이나 무자비한 지도자로 비춰지고 있습니다. 작년에 북한에 침투하려 했던 미군 70명을 때려눕힌 것으로 알려진 김정은을 향한 새로운 신화를 세우는데 박차를 가하고 있습니다.

While everyone has had to demonstrate their deep sorrow through copious amounts of tears, the word on the street across the border is that some are glad to see Kim Jong Il gone and are expressing themselves freely.  Immediately following the leaders death, there was a pretty severe crackdown on gatherings and markets were closed; however, the 'grasshoppers' were allowed to keep selling from their street corners.

북한의 모든 주민이 엄청난 양의 눈물로 그들의 깊은 슬픔을 드러내고 있지만, 국경 지역의 거리에는 김정일의 죽음을 기뻐하며 이것을 자유롭게 표현하는 문구들이 나돌고 있습니다. 지도자의 죽음에 이어서 사람들이 모이는 것을 금하고 시장도 폐쇄되었습니다. 하지만 ‘메뚜기’은 거리 구석 구석에서 판매를 계속하도록 허락받고 있습니다.

* The River of Life School 생명의강 학교

School's out for the winter!  We had our first Middle School graduation on December 22nd at Jesus Abbey.  Nine young men and young women received their diplomas from Ben Torrey as director of the Fourth River Project and a new study Bible from Principal Liz Torrey.  The festivities were kicked off with a humorous skit about life at The River of Life School as experienced by the graduating students.  This was followed by an excellent speech by student Yeji Kim who spoke at the request of her classmates.  She reviewed the mission of The River of Life School and what she and her classmates had received there. She gave thanks to the faculty for their love as well as their good teaching, to the parents for sending them to such a wonderful school and to God for making it all possible.  All nine graduates are returning to be the first River of Life School high school class.  We all look forward to having our first high school graduation in another three years with the same students!

겨울방학에 들어갔습니다. 지난 12월 22일 생명의강 학교의 첫 졸업생을 배출했습니다. 졸업식은 예수원에서 있었으며 9명의 중학교 3학년 남학생과 여학생들이 네번째강 프로젝트 본부장인 벤 토레이 형제님에게 졸업증서를 받고, 교장 리즈 토레이 선생님에게 성경책을 선물로 받았습니다. 이어서 졸업생들이 경험한 생명의강 학교 생활을 재미난 연극으로 표현해서 축제기분을 냈습니다. 또한 친구들의 권유로 김예지 학생이 졸업생 대표로 소감을 멋지게 발표했습니다. 생명의강 학교의 사명이 무엇이었으며, 이를 통해서 학생들이 얻은 것들을 이야기했습니다. 마지막으로 사랑으로 열심히 가르쳐주신 선생님들, 이렇게 좋은 학교에 자신들을 보내준 부모님, 이 모든 것을 가능하게 해 주신 하나님께 감사를 표현했습니다. 졸업생 9명 모두 내년에 생명의강 학교의 고등학교 과정에 진학할 예정입니다. 이 학생들 모두가 3년후에는 다시 고등학교를 마치는 첫 졸업생들이 되기를 기대합니다.


The week following graduation and Christmas was filled with wrapping up progress reports and the like as well as meeting with new faculty who have joined for the new school year that starts on March 2nd.  Hopefully, this month of January will be a restful one for students and teachers alike even though there are still a few things to be done like vacation homework, some accounting and accepting applications for new students.

졸업식과 성탄절에 이어서 교사들은 학기말 학생 성적 보고서를 작성했고, 내년부터 함께 근무하게 될 새로운 선생님들을 만나는 시간을 가졌습니다. 학생들은 겨울방학 숙제가 있고, 교사들도 몇 가지 회계보고와 신입생 입학사정 등의 일이 있지만 모두에게 1월 한 달이 휴식이 되기를 소망합니다.


Principal Liz will be traveling with Ben to the US for the month of January to be with family and so that they can spend some time with Ben's mother, Jane Torrey. We would appreciate your prayers for our trip.

리즈 교장 선생님은 1월 한 달 간 벤 형제님과 미국에 가서 가족들을 만나고 벤 형제님의 어머니인 현 재인 사모님과 시간을 보낼 계획입니다. 일정을 위해서 기도해 주시기 바랍니다.



* The Three Seas 삼수령

Things are fairly quiet at the Three Seas now that winter has settled in.  A very heavy snowfall in early December caused some damage, breaking limbs off trees, causing two of our summer program tents (women's shower tent and staff tent) to collapse and threatening roofs.  The snow is still around as very little has melted.  The temperature has hardly gone above freezing all month. We are truly grateful, however that our cattle are fine, no major frozen pipes in the barns or houses and we have a brand new warm home for one of our ranch families!

삼수령은 완연한 겨울에 접어 들었지만 조용합니다. 12월 초의 폭설로 나무가 부러지고, 여름 캠프를 위해서 사용하는 천막 두 동(자매 샤워장과 스탭용 천막)이 내려앉으면서 지붕이 파손됐습니다. 아직 녹지 않은 눈이 사방에 보입니다. 한 달 내내 기온이 영하여서 눈이 좀처럼 녹지 않고 있습니다. 하지만 감사하게도 소들은 모두 건강하고 축사와 모든 집들은 동파사고 없이 안전합니다. 또한 새로운 관리사가 완공되어 모든 가족들이 따뜻합니다.

This past summer, we received permission from the Forestry Department, from whom we lease the ranch property, to replace three of our small dilapidated temporary houses with brand new "manager" homes.  These are to provide housing for those who manage the ranch.  One family moved into the first of these in December and are enjoying it thoroughly.  We expect to have the funds to build a second one in the spring.  Once we do, we will tear down two of the old houses.  This has been a great encouragement to us.

지난 여름 우리는 목장 땅을 대부해 준 산림청으로부터 기존의 낡은 집을 새로운 관리사로 교체하도록 건축허가를 받았습니다. 목장을 관리하는 사람들을 위한 주택으로 허가받은 것입니다. 한 가정은 12월에 신축된 관리사로 이사해서 새로운 환경에 즐거워하고 있습니다. 봄에 두 번째 관리사를 지을 자금이 생길 것을 기대하고 있습니다. 건축이 완료되면 기존 건물 두 채는 철거할 계획입니다. 이 모든 일이 우리에게는 힘이 되고 있습니다.

We expected to get the construction permits needed to begin the first phase of construction on the center in December.  The main work outstanding was the completion of a road survey.  Work on that got snowed out by the big storm.  With over of foot of snow in the woods, we will have to wait until spring to finish the survey.  We are not anticipating any great problems with getting the permits.  We have the funds needed to complete all the preliminary work.  We are trusting the Lord that we will have the money to actually build when time to break ground arrives.  This first phase will be Community Village. It will house The River of Life School, provide dormitories for students as well as homes for teachers and other community members. You can pray with us for the Lord to provide...  

12월에 센터 건축을 위한 허가를 받을 것으로 기대했으나, 이를 위해 가장 중요한 도로 측량이 마무리되지 않았습니다. 폭설로 숲에 눈이 너무 많아서 봄까지는 작업하기가 어려운 상황입니다. 허가를 받는 데 큰 어려움은 없을 것으로 기대합니다. 기초 작업을 마치기 위해 필요한 자금은 준비된 상태입니다. 땅이 녹아서 실제 건축이 가능해 질 때 주님께서 필요한 자금을 주실 것으로 믿습니다. 센터 건축 1단계는 생명의강 학교의 캠퍼스와 기숙사 및 공동체 식구들의 숙소가 들어설 공동체 마을입니다.

As mentioned above, Ben and Liz will be in the US for the month.

* Update on Jane Torrey 현 재인 사모님 소식

Thank all of you for your prayers for my mother.  She has thoroughly enjoyed the cards and letters that so many of you have sent.  She repeatedly asks me to make sure that all of you know how much she appreciates hearing from you.

어머니를 위해서 기도해주신 분들께 감사드립니다. 어머니는 여러분께서 보내주신 편지와 카드를 보시며 기뻐하셨습니다. 어머니께서는 거듭 제게 여러분들이 전해 주신 소식에 얼마나 감사하고 계신지 알려 달라고 부탁 하셨습니다.

Her situation seems to have stabilized for the time being.  We do see evidence that the brain tumor continues to grow.  It is getting increasingly difficult for her to express her thoughts in words; however, she is very alert and suffers no pain, thank the Lord. From time to time, she will have a minor seizure usually in her right arm and hand.  She is not able to use her right arm or leg at all. She did enjoy a very pleasant Christmas with both of my sisters and went out for dinner at a friend's home.  She continues to enjoy visits from old friends.  We are truly grateful to the Lord for all of His provision for her, for the many friends that she has made among the other residents and the staff of Cascades.  She is well loved by many there.  It is a great comfort to me to know that she is well cared for in a beautiful place.  Liz and I are looking forward to spending more time wit h her this month.

어머니 건강은 잠시 정체기에 있는 듯 합니다. 뇌종양이 더 커지고 있는 증상들이 보이고 있습니다. 어머니는 언어로 생각을 표현하는데 어려움이 점점 커지고 있지만, 정신은 맑으시고 고통도 없으셔서 주님께 감사 드리고 있습니다. 때때로 오른쪽 팔과 손에 경미한 마비 증상이 나타나기도 합니다. 오른쪽 팔과 다리는 전혀 움직일 수 없는 상황입니다. 어머니는 이번 성탄에 두 여동생이 함께 있어서 즐겁게 보내셨고 친구 집에 방문해서 저녁을 드셨습니다. 또한 옛 친구들이 계속해서 찾아오고 계십니다. 우리는 주님께서 어머니의 모든 필요를 채워주심에 진심으로 감사드립니다. 또한 캐스테이드에 머물면서 함께 있는 분들 및 직원들 중에서도 많은 친구를 사귈 수 있어서 감사합니다. 어머니는 그곳에서 많은 분들의 사랑을 받고 있습니다. 리즈자매와 저는 이번 달에 어머니와 좀 더 많은 시간을 함께 할 것을 기대하고 있습니다.
